I fully expect to see articles from the Oiler propaganda crew/media praising McDavid for standing up for himself due to all the abuse he receives.

The NHL would be doing the Oilers a favor by suspending him. They will fall lower in the standings without him and increase their chances at 1st OA.

Best case scenario is to fine him, but keep him in the lineup.

Suspending the highest paid player for a couple of games is good business for the NHL Emergency Assistance Fund.

Results of hearing: Leddy suspended 5 games for obstructing McDavid's shoulder with his head. McDavid awarded the Lady Byng Trophy + $1000000 and a new car.

They are what, 27th in the league currently and he has played all but 2 games when he had the plague and leprosy (praise be to McJesus for curing himself of these fatal ailments). With or without him in the lineup, they are a crappy hockey team. The fact that Oiler media homers are praising their amazing game last night (beating a tired team playing the back half of a back to back in OT) is a testament to how horrible this team really is.

The table is perfectly set for the NHL to set a standard here

Leddy wasn't hurt
McDavid made contact with the head, intentional or not
The Oilers are not making the playoffs
Everyone is expecting preferential treatment

You're not going to eliminate the Oilers with this suspension - that happened months ago. But a reasonable response (don't swing the other way and go heavy-handed) will set the tone around the league that no matter who you are, no matter how the hurt player responded... a hit to the head = 2 games.

If the Oilers were actually in the playoff mix or only 1 or 2 points out, you can bet they'd just give him a slap on the wrist and maybe a fine.

But since they're 6 points out and their season is essentially over at this point, I think they'll give him at least a game.

I know how this stuff works, but it really shouldn't matter where they are in the standings. Doesn't really make a difference to Leddy's head, does it?

Doesn't matter who the player is and where his team is in the standings. It's a bad hit and IMO warrants 1-2 games in any situation.

I got a notification from the NHL app the morning tell me to watch McDavid's OT winner from last night. I was like... "he should have gotten 5 and a game like anyone else would have, so the goal doesn't count... ps. Edmonton sucks."

He's basically saying that any player without a history of suspension or fines has the right to target McDavid's head at will. "The first one is free"

Did Leddy have to go through the concussion protocol? Surprised if he didn't, but Edmonton concussion spotters are most likely no good.

Yes, he did. I was impressed because it was actually Barry Trotz insistently motioning for Leddy to get off the ice.

Not meaning to pick on you, but we see this comment every time.

The NHL does not set standards, and it does not do precedents. It never has, and it never will.

Maybe his head shouldn't have gotten in the way of McGoat's shoulder

i had a hockey game last night and afterwards we went out of nachos and beverages after our game. sports center was on the tv's so there was lots of discussion about the hit to the head.
the oil fans were exactly like guys mentioned above... it was a nothing hit, no way he should get a suspension or even a fine, do you know how many times mc crossover gets hooked and hacked and that never gets called, blah blah blah.
i piped up that if mc dingle gets suspended it could really hurt the oil's playoff chances... then burst out laughing. all the guys liked that.... well, except for the oil fans... and then the one oil fan got all upset and was going on and on about how chucky is a turtling baby becuz he wouldn't fight caveman kassian (however long ago that was).

Oh, for sure.

But a player this high profile usually isn't on teams missing the playoffs at this point in the season

With the McDavid name, Canadian team, no one injured and no major penalty called on the play it would be the precedent they could point to

...if they ever wanted to do that, that is (to your point)

Would this be the first time they've suspended a whole NHL team?

If he is suspended then the NHL cost the Oilers a playoff spot by unfairly suspending their top player (aka entire team) for an on ice incident that didn't happen.

I can see it now.

I hope he is only fined. His suspension should be having to play for the Oilers and lose pay for it. No sick days allowed McElbows.

The serious answer, believe it or not, is no. The Hamilton Tigers were suspended en masse in 1925 for refusing to play in the playoffs unless the players got more money.
