Semi-related question: Is there any exit poll or other official data from the Vancouver plebiscite?

Edit: More specifically plebiscite vote results by age and gender.

Vancouver budget information isn’t actually released until later isn’t it? So we don’t actually know how badly they blew the budget. Or so I thought I read in the previous monster thread.

From yesterday:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...sing-1.4889445

When Calgary's Olympic bid appeared to be on the verge of flaming out, the bid corporation made some last minute, late night adjustments — or more specifically cuts to its budget which eliminated 1,000 units from its original housing promise.

The bid corporation was unable to clarify the exact details of its revised, scaled-down plan.

The Community Housing Affordability Collective declined an interview request until it gets more details about the plan.

There are skeptics the bid corporation will not be able to deliver on its promises — even though the number has been cut to 1,800 units.

"Past experience suggests there's a high risk of it not happening," said Ron Kneebone, with the University of Calgary's school of public policy.

Kneebone has studied affordable housing and poverty issues for years. He said Olympic Games rarely stay on budget and once the cost overruns start adding up, affordable housing or other benefits for low-income earners are usually one of the first things to go.

"I understand the city is going to be on the hook for those cost overruns and they're going to have to make a decision, where are we going to have to cut back," he said.

Organizers of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games promised to build 252 affordable housing units as part of its Olympic village in the southeast False Creek area, but delivered half of that amount.

The athletes' village, which has been moved out of the Rivers District near Stampede Park, was expected to be a mix of market and non-market housing post-Games.

A new location hasn't been revealed.

"We'll be happy to share that publicly once it's confirmed,
" said Beck.

Was there a rumor circulating that all the hockey would be played in Edmonton because of their new rink? I heard some people talking about that, and I was flabbergasted that people believe this.

And do they know where they are building it? Becuase that’s a tiny determining factor in cost.

I don't remember hockey ever being discussed for Edmonton. I think only curling was ever mentioned to be in Edmonton, but then BidCo said that curling would be "somewhere in southern Alberta".

The City will be getting a combined $2.1b contribution from the feds and province that otherwise wouldn't be given without the Olympics. I will vote yes.

I'm starting a young family and I can't wait to create some special memories.

Yeah I definitely came across that rumour online, but never saw it cited in from any news source. Would have been a hard show stopper for Calgary to pay out the nose for the Olympics and have the crown jewel event in Edmonton I imagine.

Hockey is only a crown jewel if NHL'ers are playing.

I'm kind of annoyed that curling hasn't been locked down for being in Calgary yet, that is going to be a pretty good event and we probably won't even end up hosting it.

I'm guessing Lethbridge gets the curling...which is fine as they have a shiny new facility that Calgary simply can't match, though seating is limited as it stands right now.

From the talk around this place I thought the vote would be a blowout, with only 20% support. Interesting to see the yes side winning here. Might be closer than I thought.

I am sure there is good reason but why isn't winspprt a option for curling?

Yeah... but CP likely isn't a place that's an accurate representation of the demographics of the city population (we're probably significantly more male, younger, and affluent then the City as a whole).

Bowen group took the quote "We shouldn't view the Games in a dollars and cents way." Tombe said. "We shouldn't think of it as some kind of investment that yeilds a 10-to-1 return."

and made it "think of it as some kind of investment that yeilds a 10-to-1 return."
