Giles day to day again. Doesn't sound serious, but for the love of god Atkins get some trades done before the 11th hour with all the best assets nursing minor injuries or worse.

Biggio has cooled right off, and Vlad continues to look very, very average.
At least Jansen has found something at the plate. He's sporting a .950~ OPS since June 1st, which is a pretty good sample size now.

There is nothing average about Vlad Jr. The fact that he is in the majors and contributing at 20 years old makes him well above average. 20 years just don't make it to the majors all the time, it is very rare. The other thing here is that there is absolutely no reason for teams to pitch to him as he is the only threat on this team, and that is tough for a 20 year old who wants to show he belongs. Just have to be patient because big things are coming.

The fact that he's 20 and in the majors is indeed impressive. His performance so far however is definitely average.
He's gone a long time now without adjusting despite being thoroughly owned.
His bat needs to be elite, because he's a terrible fielder and baserunner.
It's early, but he needs to adjust soon.

He'll adjust, it might not happen for awhile, might not even happen this season and it doesn't need to, but it will happen.
One thing that this management team has failed at is giving these young players (Guerrero Jr., Biggio, Jansen, and eventually Bichette) support. The only established bats in this lineup are Galvis and Smoak and they are barely above replacement level.
They needed better bats so that these young players didn't need to carry the entire load offensively. Right now there is absolutely no reason to pitch to Guerrero Jr. or Biggio, because they are really the only threats in the lineup, so the game plan facing Toronto would be to avoid giving this two anything to hit.

Jackson finally got DFAed. Waguespack takes his spot.

Waguespack has been downright awful in Buffalo, I don't see how any of this can be viewed as positive.
Not a lot of help in the pitching pipeline at the moment.
The Vlad concerns are genuine. His exit velocity dropping is the weird one for me. Seems like something that shouldn't really deviate. Unless he was fighting injuries, which clearly didn't seem like that case at the HR Derby.

The Vlad concern is probably more conditioning than anything else. Personally in this market I don't like hyping prospects without proper management guidance in the background because these guys get inflated egos and keep thinking if they keep doing what they're doing, they'll be fine. But at a young age it's about being humble and guided in the right direction by the team around you. Vlad has been hyped for years, and has grown chubbier over the past couple seasons despite the subtle/not-so-subtle warnings from upper management. It puts the team in an awkward position to reprimand him for not listening, but what can you do to the future star of the team? It's about humility, and I'm not sure there's a true vet on the team who can take him under his wing. His numbers generally are alright, but after his derby showing, I don't think there's been a realization that he needs to improve in any way.

Vlad's first at bat was a good example of his struggles. He's not being patient and waiting for his pitches like he was earlier in the season. He swung at the first pitch which was off his shoe tops and pulled a weak grounder to 3rd. And that was after watching Sogard have a 10 pitch at bat. Vlad should've taken 1 or 2 and looked for what he wanted.

Unless Waguespack has an Estrada-like change up those low 90s dead straight belt high four seam fastballs are going to get squared up a lot.

Even though Vladdy flied out to CF that was actually a pretty great AB for him relative to his recent play.

Tune in just in time to watch Vlad ground another one to 3B. Devers bobbles it but because Vlad doesn't hustle out of the box he's still thrown out easily.

If Gurriel can hit a dinger here he will hit for the cycle plus the Jays will have combined for a cycle in this inning.
That'd be cool.

Now THAT'S a better at-bat, Vladdy Jr.
The more add on runs, the better.

2nd half Grichuk is right on time.
Basically batting practice right now.
