Interviews with Chinese Flames fans
Being a Chinese expat, I thought I'd try my hand at translating some of the conversations between Brian Wong and attendees at the Beijing game. The intro/outtro is done in Cantonese which I don't speak, but the rest is in Mandarin.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1042888632040747009
Woman 1: "Hockey is a very new sport to the country of China. But we think it's a great sport, and for kids especially. It really appeals to the nature of children. I feel if Chinese kids tried hockey first before any other sport, then it's a done deal! They probably wouldn't like any other sport after that!"
------
Wong: "What do you think about the state of hockey in our country?"
Woman 2: "Here in Beijing, it's not bad currently and constantly improving. Hockey [youth program] development is being heavily encouraged in China at this time."
Wong: "That is good to hear. Is cost prohibitive? How much is the cost per year to support a child in hockey?"
Woman 2: "Well, we just started with ours, right now I'd say about $100,000 CNY/yr." (~$15,000 USD)
------
Woman 3 is, as you may have guessed, doing the "Go Flames" chant in Chinese.
Fun fact: The Chinese phrase of "let's go team" translates literally to "adding oil/fuel"("Jia Yo" - 加油). Couple the accidental wordplay with the fact that the Flames wear red, it's not surprising that many new fans picked the Flames to randomly cheer for. If they used the retros instead of the home reds, I think the team would've had an even warmer reception.
------
Guy 1: "So far I'm also playing hockey here. I think it's fantastic that they're sending the Flames. I thought their performance was good, and I hope by watching more I can learn from them."
------
Wong: "So hockey is obviously popular in North America, but what about in China?"
Big Bro w/ Little Bro: "It's actually becoming more popular in China too. A lot of kids are starting these days, I think development of this sport in China will be very good."
------
Wong: "Do you feel that the development of hockey in our country will be good?"
Woman 3: "It's already decent right now. There's a lot of hockey fans here, who don't have many opportunities to be able to watch this level of competition live. So I think it will be excellent."
------
Wong: "What were your first impressions like?"
Girl 1: "Very exciting! Thrilled!"
Wong: "How come?"
Girl 1: "Getting to see two teams live & up close!"
------
Wong: "What do you think of watching live?"
Little Kid: "Handsome!" [too young and still doesn't know the words]
Wong: "Why?"
Little Kid: "The teams both look strong!"
------
Guy at End: "I had great first impressions from the game. Clearly the competition at the NHL level is extremely high, the best in the world. It was very exciting to watch it live."

I heard it as "shi wan" (十万 - "ten 10k") which is 100,000 yuan. Definitely a huge financial commitment.

I’ve played soccer with and against him in the past and I’m always very happy to run into him. An amazingly productive guy and always super kind!

Considering the average wage in Beijing is about $115,000(yuan)$17,000(cdn) it's safe to say hockey is for the upper class. I guess they're starting out the way we have become!

Thanks a lot. It has been fascinating seeing Chinese culture interacting with hockey culture.
Hopefully with a few more years of NHL games and the Olympics hockey can take a foothold in China. They have money and part of the country is cold so it could work.

He's damned good at soccer too. haha. When my dad's team brought him on when he first immigrated here, he was that young wonderkid out there.
I agree too, you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer person.
I love how he's always been such a Flames fan, and now he's doing stuff with the team.

Thanks for this. Didnt watch the video yet but did the last kid say 帅 "shuai"? I have heard it used as slang for "cool". Could be what he meant in this context.
