Karlsson to SJ for Tierney, DeMelo, Norris, Balcers, 1st, 2nd, and 2 cond picks
https://www.nhl.com/senators/news/ot...ld/c-300094100
Quote:
The Senators acquired four players: centre Josh Norris (San Jose's 2017 19th overall draft choice), forward prospect Rudolfs Balcers, centre Chris Tierney and defenceman Dylan DeMelo.
The deal includes the following:
Ottawa receives San Jose's first-round choice in either 2019 or 2020 (not lottery protected); if the Sharks miss the playoff in 2018-19 it will be a 2019 selection, otherwise it will be in 2020.
Ottawa receives a second-round choice in the 2019 draft from San Jose (which will be the higher of the two picks the Sharks currently own, the Florida Panthers and their own);
The deal also includes two conditional picks:
Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.
The trade comes in exchange for Erik Karlsson and minor league player Francis Perron.

Considering how the last trade with the Sharks went, I'd be very nervous if I were a Sens fan.

That's a scary rumor if you're a Sens fan, the Sharks system pretty much only has B prospects, they've had one top ten pick in the last 11 years and their NHL roster is old as hell.
If you trade Karlsson it has to be blue chippers coming back... not a package of former late 1sts or 2nds. Meier for me is their only young player with front line upside. Roy maybe has second pairing upside on D. But man I think they would get killed by their fans if they traded him for a package even with those two and change.

I don't mind this.
I believe concerns about Karlsson's post-surgery on-ice effectiveness are legitimate, and he is going to cost the Sharks a mint.

Lol, I read a Sens fan on Twitter ask how much worse things could get.
He forgot how bad this trade could be on their end. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ottawa add something to get back what they think is going to be a pivotal piece.
OTT: Karlsson + 2019 2nd
SJ: A bunch of pieces that amount to an underpayment for Karlsson + Hertl

Would think Burns would be going back? Maybe they ask for Jones?

It would pretty much have to include Meier, Merkley and next year's first I would think. The Sharks are going to have some real trouble replenishing the lineup pretty soon.
EDIT: Unless an extension has been agreed to it certainly would not be Brent Burns. And that would be hilarious from the Sens' perspective too, what a terrible idea that would be.

SJ was ahead the Flames anyway so I don't see this as a problem.

Seems unlikely that if the Sharks go all in by acquiring Karlsson that they move out a core piece. Or that the Sens would want an older player in return. They just seem like terrible trading partners. If you've got to sell your fans on Timo Meier as the bulk of the return for the best defenseman in the league you're in trouble. Decent young player and everything but still...

He had the surgery last year. In-between then and now, Karlsson had 62 points.
Looks like he's fine. He's Erik Karlsson. He's already come back from a severed Achilles and lost part of his foot. And he's still one of the absolute best in the world at what he does.
And he does all of this for the Senators, where he has no help. "OH, is Karlsson going to be able to handle the loss of Marc Methot????" That guy who had 3 points in 36 games with the Stars?
Methinks yes.
You could play Karlsson, Burns and Vlasic 20 minutes a night each, reduce the wear and tear on all three to 2nd pairing levels, and never have a moment in the entire game when one of them isn't on the ice.
Really hope this doesn't happen. The Sharks don't have the goods, Melnyk! Don't be a fool!

Well in order to make the playoffs, we have to leapfrog somebody.

The sens need to ask for Jones as part of the deal then flip him to the Flames....or maybe Dell.

I think it'll will be a battle between Vegas, LA and the Flames.
If SJ gets Karlsson they'll take the division.

But almost certainly not as good and never will be again as he was in 2017. Last year saw his lowest offensive output since he missed most of the 2012-13 season.

Do you think they should still play the games or should the rest of the division just hand first place to them?

Most players never again do what they did when they were 27.
His son died, the other off ice stuff is well documented, and on top of that, then you get to the actual roster. And in the midst of that, Karlsson still had 62 points.
If Erik Karlsson gets back fresh start, he's winning the Norris this year. If he goes to SJ, they become favorites to win it all IMO.
