What the Duece. I mean I guess Hughes isn't getting younger, and he's starting to rack up injuries, and we're deep on defensive line, especially at end.

But I'm going to miss that guy.

Ouch. But Hufnagel does have a record of trading or releasing vets at the twilight of their prime (re Nik Lewis)

He was probably one of the highest paid D-linemen in the CFL or close to it, and that's a position with a lot of depth.

http://www.cflhorsemen.ca/depth-chart.html

Clearly the Stamps want to go with a starting line of Davis and Law on the ends, which is a very good set of ends.

We still have to sign most of the secondary, Campbell (Though I'm still mad at him over the Outside Leverage mistake), Wall and Evans, and we still need to shore up our Linebacker depth, as well as sign Messam or another running back and possibly a return specialist if Finch doesn't return.

This is probably money that's really needed.

Gotta trust Huf on this one but man I don't like it. I guess signing Davis made it so they needed Hughes money to make it work.

Guarantee he goes to Hamilton and turns in an all star like performance.

Damn.

It certainly frees up some money for additional signings, but I'm going to miss the Sackmaster.

Big holes on the veteran side left with Bell moving up to a coaching spot and Hughes going to the tabbies.

Quote:
“In a salary-cap world, sometimes difficult decisions have to be made and this is definitely a very difficult decision,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “Charleston has been a big part of our winning ways over the past 10 years and I thank him for his service and for the positive impact he made on this organization and this community. I wish him nothing but the best for the future.”

I love Hughes, I cleaned him out at a poker tournament and he didn't rip my face off, so I owe him my life.

(It was charity not some underworld mob poker game)

But at 34 and the cost of contract, and with Law and Davis being very good, you take that chance.

I'm still guessing that Messam isn't on the first signing page for Huff.

Hufnagel is a master at football. His judgment is to be trusted 100%. Why the Stamps don't win the Grey Cup every year or two under his rule is simply one of life's greatest mysteries.

What the...

Trading Hughes is a move I never expected.

"The Calgary Stampeders have traded All-Star defensive end Charleston Hughes and the 34th overall draft pick in the 2018 CFL Draft to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in exchange for the 28th overall draft pick in the 2018 CFL Draft and an additional fourth round pick in the 2019 Draft. The Ticats will also receive a fourth round draft pick in the trade."

Sounds like a pure salary dump

It is a pure salary dump, but the problem with a guy like Hughes is that his contract is difficult for a lot of teams to take on, so if there was no trade, it was likely that Huff would have cut him lose and we'd have gotten nothing.

Class of the league for the better part of the ten years he's been running things.

Only two GC wins though in five appearances. Typical Stamps.

The overall team win percentage in those ten years though is really remarkable when put up against the other 8 teams in the league. Pure and utter dominance.

Primary team Calgary: 130-48-2
Points for Calgary: 5428
Points against Calgary: 4052

As you say if he's willing to let go of Hughes it's probably telling that Messam won't be back unless he's willing to take a big discount. Going to be a different team this upcoming season.

If they decide not to bring back Messam and they dumped Hughes and Bell retired, they've already socked away probably around $380,000 (assuming Hughes and Messam are $150 and Bell was $80)

That certainly makes it easier to sign the guys that are not going to the NHL and possibly go after a need like a Outside Linebacker or a more dynamic running back.

What do you guys think about possibly bringing back Eric Rogers?

That's tough, I know last year when I bought it up jokingly with Huff that he really liked Eric, but after two years of not playing in a meaningful game. I would think that he would be a risk to bring him in on anything but a tryout contract.

I would think that Eric is going to continue to go from Camp to Camp in the NFL until he's run dry of the NFL.

As it needs to be after back-to-back losses in the GC. Got to bring in some new enthusiasm that is not carrying the weight of disappointment into the room.

Rogers is still only 26 years old so if there's assurance that he's 100% I would take a long hard look as he's got NFL skills.

Just to follow on my comment about Huff's team building abilities, and regular season dominance, I was curious so I looked up the regular season numbers since the start of 2008 when Huff took over the Stamps.

1. Calgary - 130-48-2 (0.722)
2. BC - 97-83-0 (0.538)
3. Edmonton - 96-84-0 (0.533)
4. Montreal - 92-88-0 (0.511)
5. Saskatchewan - 85-95-0 (0.472)
6. Hamilton - 72-103-0 (0.427)
7. Ottawa - 30-40-2 (0.416)
8. Toronto - 74-106-0 (0.411)
9. Winnipeg - 73-107-0 (0.405)

That's fricken nuts.

Calgary has 33 more wins than 2nd place BC, who has only 24 more wins than 9th place Winnipeg. More of a gap between between 1st and 2nd than 2nd and 9th. ####ing dominance that should have been driven home hard by back to back GC championships these last two seasons.

Anyways, just thought it was neat to look at, thought I'd share.

Long live Huff.
Win more Grey Cups please.

Hughes gone. Crazy. Hopefully they can replace him but he's much more than just a great pass rusher.
