Default 2012 : The year the music died

Not really but seriously it is already well into May and there hasn't been anything that outstanding come out yet. My I-Tunes account shows that my purchases are down by 75% this year. I typically don't buy albums unless there are at least three songs that make you want to explore the more obscure songs on the album which often turn out to be even better then the songs that hook you in. Is anyone else finding this? 2012 : Give me you top 5 albums thus far. I need to reload for spring. Canadian Indie which is typically decent has also been very boring this year. Lots of good songs around but nobody is stringing together anything significant.

There hasn't really been much good music since 1972.

I have high hopes for Synthetica. However as much as I dig Youth Without Youth it does sound a lot like muse.

And I think Blunderbuss by Jack White is pretty decent. I've only listened to it once on Rdio though.

(Canadian)

(Canadian(weakerthans (best band) side project))

These songs belong to great albums this year. I don't listen to nearly the amount of new music that I used to, but I agree that 2012 has been a little slow. Looking forward to seeing some of the recommendations here as well.

Heres a couple ok songs from Twin Atlantic. I always go easy on Scottish bands Not bad though, although album was released last year. Another Scottish band that should release some good new material this year is Biffy Clyro.

Twin Atlantic : Make a beast of myself

Twin Atlantic : Free
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkY-sEkWc-I&ob=av2e

I don't know about the 1970s but both of the above songs sound like they could have come out of the 90's. Still ok.

Also really looking forward to Japandroids and will purchase Bloom which is a great sounding album, although a slow burn. Need something out of the blue like a new Empire of the Sun album or something.

"I've purchased 75% less on iTunes that I usually do". first world problem.

Try listening to other types of music than your usual. There are LOTS of exciting bands out there in all genres.

It's ok, Wintersun's "Time" will come out by the end of summer so we'll have 1 good record this year.

Really? I was actually just thinking the opposite, 2012 has been awesome for music thus far, with more on the way.

Released in 2012
- Grimes: Visions
- Sleigh Bells: Reign of Terror
- Die Antwoord: Ten$ion
- Jack White: Blunderbuss

Upcoming Releases
- Japandroids: Celebration Rock
- Metric: Synthetica

At this point half of my "top 10 albums of 2012" list is covered.

The new Metric single they started playing on x92.9 is really catchy as well. I hope the whole album is like that.

I like Grimes and semi-related Trust also put out a good album but at the same time they are darker winter type albums. Time for some big shiny summer tunes.

Youth Lagoon : The year of hibernation & Chromatics : Kill for love also put out similar sounds (similar to Grimes & Trust), this year and both albums are decent. Then again the Chromatics song that stands out to me is from the 70's
