My Arizona friends insist the best pizza in the USA is in Phoenix:

No one thinks to call Phoenix the pizza capital of America, much less the world. In fact, it would be fair to say that before transplanted New Yorker Chris Bianco opened Pizzeria Bianco in 1994, Phoenix was not even considered the crust capital of Arizona. Now food lovers from around the globe make the pilgrimage and wait three hours for food so good even my Neapolitan friends grudgingly acknowledge that the best pizza in the world is being made in Phoenix.

"Pizza is this dangerous thing," says Bianco, 43, whose voice drips with the Bronx. "It puts people in this nostalgic mode. Maybe it was the first food you ate outside of the home, and because of that, it's like, your independence. People form incredibly strong opinions about it, and then they go to Italy, and they know everything."

I'll vouch for Verona downtown. Think I'll go grab some on my way to the c-train.

If they all use most of the same core ingredients....one would assume the pizza in Naples is that much more fresh no?
Naples pretty much ruined me for NY pizza....Ny pizza is a bit of a different product and still good, but man, it's just not as transcendent. The buffalo mozzarella alone.....god, I remember once eating just a bag of cheese for dinner, and it was one of the best meals ever. I could eat a bucket of that stuff.

Just a personal preference thing. For some reason, my taste buds preferred Grimaldi's over authentic Naples pizza. Not by a lot, but just slightly. The freshness can't be beat with Naples pizza though.

I'm convinced Joey Tomatoes' tandoori chicken pizza is the best pizza I've ever had in my life.

There are several styles of pizza here so I will weigh in...
Greek style pizza: I have to give it to Bella Roma. 20percent off on pick up orders and order extra sauce. The sauce is some of the best pizza sauce i have ever tried.
Italian style: Il Centro is quite amazing and authentic. the only issue with them is their bizzare hours. If you don't know the hours, check before you dine, you might be disappointed.
Runner up goes to Piero's pizzeria. I think it may be closed due to piero being in Italy, but their pizzas are quite good.
Franchise: CPU on 17th ave and 37th st sw, and their chicken fingers are pretty amazing.
Runner up: the Brooklyn style pizza from Dominoes. Papa johns is better overall though.
The mexican pizza from Voglio, is outta this world. It's like one giant taco. It's awesome.

Walked across the bridge to Pulcinella last night, I had the diavola with a drizzling of chili pepper oil, friend ordered the margherita, and we started with a caprese. Every time I go there, the food and service is brilliant.

Niko's on 11th St is my new favourite Greek pizza. It's a lot like Volo's but I'd say it better, and it's closer to my place.

No love for Manie's downtown on 17th?

Was at Pulcinella tonight, it was great, as it always is. That said, even better than their pizza is their mozzarella. If you go there and don't get a caprese salad you've failed.

I just ate a pizza from Gondola Pizza on 26th and it was one of the worst pizzas I've ever had. Does anyone have the same opinion, or was that just a really bad accident?

You need a hot tub time machine to find Gondola Pizza.

Really sketchy place that gondola, the Chinese food place is creepy too. What is with the dumpy strip mall next door.

After living in Italy, I'm pretty sure I've eaten cat meat before. I'm ok with that. What I'm not ok with is crappy pizza. A good sauce is important, even on a cat meat pizza.
