If you go by regulation wins Edmonton had 37 and Calgary had 32.
Flames made up ground with 3 on 3 and shootouts.
They had 17 ties to Edmonton's 19, but gained 13 extra points in those games to Edmonton's 10.
There really isn't any such thing as a loser point. Those always existed as ties. Rather they added a gimmick point for the team that wins the S/O or 3on3.
Under old school standings Edmonton would have finished:
37-26-19
and Calgary:
32-33-17
That's a bigger difference (12 points) when you remove the parts of the game that aren't really hockey.
I agree with this guy (gross).
During a regular season, it should always be win loss tie, no overtime.
"I am actually more excited for the Oilers game tomorrow than the Flames game. I am praying for multiple jersey tosses. The Oilers are my new favourite team for all the wrong reasons. I hate them so much I love them."
Just musing the Hamilton vs Larsson poll on HF and the amount of garbage spewed by Oilers fans is beyond laughable. Larsson is losing the poll by a large margin so of course Oilers posters begin the claim that Klefbom is now better than Hamilton. It actually blows my mind how petty and bias these fans are. One fan actually claimed Klefbom was the best Dman on any Canadian team, the delusion is amazing. Klefbom hasn't even hit 40pts in a season something Hamilton did in his second full season but following the Larsson narrative his defense is so great that it doesn't matter. This just makes me laugh.

Man, the Oilers missing the playoffs this coming season would be absolutely MAJESTIC.
I don't think it's going to happen (would love to see it), but they had a perfect storm of favorable scheduling, career seasons from several players, and health come together last year. Already that's being put to the test with Sekera likely to miss a good chunk of the season.

The thing is, theres no dealing with the Oilers or their fans.
The Edmonton Oilers just posted a decade of the worst performances that could still be labeled as 'Professional' and all of a sudden at the drop of a lottery ball that decade is gone and we're back in the 80s.
2006-2016? Never happened.

Yeah, I've been following that one for a bit, its pretty laughable, Klefbom is decent but that's about it, but its going to be tougher for him with Sekera out.
I mean frankly they took out Eberle and you take out Sekera and replace them with Strome and its a significantly worse team.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did miss the playoffs, all the pieces are there to slide
1) Eberle replaced by Strome
2) Sekera out leaves that blueline vulnerable
3) Talbot saw a lot of shots, especially from the danger areas and he's going to have to replicate that performance
4) A lot of career years
5) A schedule that was heavy on teams coming through on the second night of back to backs
6) Teams paying way more attention to McDavid physically.
7) No significant injuries last year.
that's a lot of elements that went right for them.
I mean to me there's only two sure things in the pacific. The Canucks are going to suck, the Knights are going to blow.

I wouldn't want my team going into the season with that blue line but the fact is very few Oilers fans think that it matters. They are sorely mistaken.

Again, and it really cant be stressed enough, last year was the Oilers' Cinderella Year. The stars aligned for them.
Now, that blueline is concerning, but Oiler-fans are of the opinion that they're going to always get Godlike goaltending from Talbot, in which case you can go into next season with a cardboard cutout of that blueline, but you're rarely going to always get that level of goaltending that consistently for that long.
But it doesnt matter! Oiler fans are like Goldfish. Look! Treasure!!

don't forget the 8 points or whatever it was that we absolutely gifted them

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Why on earth is there a Hamilton v. Larson poll? That is like attempting to draw comparisons between Tyler Seguin and Brandon Dubinsky.
The fact that it isn't completely lopsided poll in favor of Hamilton shows how naive and factually inept the users of that site are. Then again it is the site with the biggest congregation of Oilers fans on the internet so what else would you expect.
