Default Yakupov to the KHL (1 yr)

Barring an excellent season(s) in Russia, this could be it for Yakupov in North America.

he can go to the worst team in the KHL with the worst climate and ownership and just an all around nightmare situation with a big smile on his face and he'll think "at least it's not edmonton!"

where would you rank him among the worst 1st overall picks? I mean he has to be in that conversation next to guys like Stefan, right?

I cannot decide one over the other so will say Yak and Stefan are tied for the worst 1st overalls of the modern era. When trying to compare Stefan played more games and an extra season while being a better 2 way player and Yak was the better goal scorer with a higher points per game. Some of Yak's points were the result of the Oilers gifting him power play time though.

It really wasn’t a great draft year period. It’s not like they chose Yakupov over quality players like the Sedins. Murray or Galchenyuk instead? Yay???

The guy had inflated stats from blowing the zone before any professional hockey player would ever think to do so, and floating at the far blue line. Watching him live in the OHL he was pretty ho-hum. Now he can go to the KHL and inflate his stats hoping for a NHL return one day. But I really don’t think he has that much to offer.

Yeah that was a horrible draft so the Flames getting Jankowski out of that first round is a win after all.

Not much top end talent, but some decent depth to it through the first round. Lots of NHL players there, and not really any good reason why the #1 pick shouldn't at least be among them.

Right. See your own signature for how the top of each draft class works out.

Since the first open draft in 1969, I believe he is statistically the third worst. Greg Joly (1974) had 95 points in 364 games. Gord Kluzak (1982) was just behind Yakupov.

I don't dislike Yak. I think he's got great potential.

I think he was completely 100% mismanaged by terrible player development in Edmonton.

I also anticipate Russian media coverage using Yak as an example for young stars not to go to North America.

Not any more, than NA media using Yak as an example not to draft Russians high. Both are tough to sell with Ovechkin hoisting the Cup.

If Galchenyuk hadn't torched his knee, he would have gone first overall that year. I wonder what different things the Oilers would have done to help ruin his career.

The Habs did a pretty good job of that themselves. But he'll get another chance in Arizona, and I'm sure he'll do well there, particularly if guys like Strome, Perlini and Dvorak take a step offensively. All of those guys have the tools to do more than they have to date, and really only one of them needs to break out for the Yotes to be in decent shape up front going forward. They should be fast, and they're not icing a single forward over the age of 30. Too bad about that Barrett Hayton pick.

I would've gone multi-year if I were Yak. He's gonna need multiple good years in the KHL to get back to the NHL
