At least Lazar is young and cheap, with a chance to actually improve.
Smith is older and more expensive. His best years are more than likely behind him.
Don't do it Tre!

The only guys I'd want from the sens would be Stone, Hoffman and Chabot. It seems Hoffman is in play so there's a chance. I doubt they trade the other 2 but if they did, I'd love to have Stone.

Hoffman is the player on the Sens I would want, but I don't see what we could offer that would make sense for the Sens.

Can we please have skill far above character in our priorities with this next acquisition, please.
We don't need a glut of good guys, we need a team that can win.

Smith had 9 more points than Stajan last year.

Surprised a Garrioch "rumor" is getting this much attention.

Would you rather discuss the new arena saga, or how much GG/Brouwer/Stajan/Lazar suck and have no right being in the league? Because I think we might have covered those topics once or twice before.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I had dismissed Garrioch in the past but last June it was Sureloss who provided me a few examples where Garrioch was right so now I'm concerned.

The Flames are missing a top level RW, or perhaps even a PP specialist. Bringing in Troy Brouwer-lite is not going to solve a single problem.

Ferland has definitely been a top level RW so far this year.
Now 3rd amongst RWers in goals and his playmaking abilities are starting to shine a bit more too.

With Ferland proving capable of producing as the 1st line RW, and Bennet/Janko looking to be breaking out and being on the upswing, the only real question mark in the top 9 is Backlunds status going forward.
I'm all for an upgrade if they can find it without creating a bunch of holes elsewhere. Otherwise just get the guy extended already.
Other than that my only wish is for the Flames to not bog down the 4th line with overpaid veterans. If they stick with Brouwer and don't buy him out, he's already in the mix, the other two spots should be filled out either from within (Mangiapane, Hrivic, Dube, Hathaway, Lazar, Klimchuk, Lomberg, etc) OR with cheaper veterans on short term deals if the younger guys can't cut it quite yet.
Love Stajan, but thank **** his contract is up finally. No sense replacing him with another older guy with another potentially terrible contract that we find ourselves regretting year after year.

Let's not overrate Melnyk here. Allow me to remind you of a famous little story:
Way back in the Middle Ages, when HNIC first went to colour broadcasting, Harold Ballard was pissed off because he had to install brighter lights in Maple Leaf Gardens. He wanted to make the money back by forcing the CBC to pay extra to use the lights. They refused, of course. So just before broadcast time Saturday night, he went up in the rafters and threatened to chop the main power cable to the lights with a fire axe. The CBC caved and paid him his money.
Now that's cheap. Melnyk only wishes he could be that cheap.
None of this takes anything away from your point, which is a good one. I just wouldn't want anyone putting Melnyk in the Skinflint Hall of Fame yet.

Throwing spaghettti against the wall here, but maybe our purported interest in Smith is tied to Backlund’s future. If we acquire Smith maybe it is tied to selling high on Backlund at the deadline. Not saying that Smith would be a direct replacement for Backlund, rather bring in Smith to not deplete our C depth while we move out Backlund for futures. Management would have to be confident that Janko is ready for increased duties.

Sacrilege!
Completely agree. I think the Flames know the state of negotiations with Backlund and will be setting themselves up to deal him at the deadline. If they had the resources to eat the loss of Backlund I could see them doing so for a possible playoff run. But without the draft picks, they need to do the smart thing and manage their assets appropriately. It isn't like Backlund is ripping it up and they can't survive without his offense. They need someone to step in and be a solid contributor in certain areas, and Smith checks those boxes off. I suspect that Smith would be a stop gap measure until a player like Dube steps up and steals his milk money on him. That is still a couple years away, and we need that stop gap. With the loss of Backlund and Stajan, another center under contract is likely a requirement moving forward.

So let's talk about nothing because a bunch of other unrelated stuff has been discussed previously?
Quite the bar to clear.
It was a pretty innocuous comment that refers to the portly fellow from Ottawa and his well earned reputation for making stuff up.
