I almost feel like it makes more sense for you to acquire a rockbox compatible music player (or a decent dedicated music player in general) and bypass your phone as much as possible. Keep a smaller converted library on your phone in the event you only have your phone. I still keep a Cowon J3 and a few other small players for this reason. That... and new phones don't have dedicated headphone jacks and using a lightning to 3.5 converter is dumb.

iTunes Match works well for me. All my library in the cloud and available to all devices.

However, iTunes will be shut down any day now, to be replaced by Apple Music. I think it will be compatible and not effect what I am doing, but there are no guarantees what it will look like.

+1

Most people are kidding themselves if they think they can distinguish the difference blindly.

It mostly depends on what you’re listening on. If you have crap headphones, it’ll sound like crap.

There’s also a difference in mastering between some of the tracks I own and apple or google versions. I don’t want some crap “remastered” version that has had all the dynamic range flushed away because of the loudness wars. This is especially true for classic rock.

Plex has a dedicated music app now. The latest update fixed most of the issues I had and it’s become my main music player. It requires a Plex Pass but I got the lifetime pass years ago.

It does a great job organizing my library, adding art and descriptions. It had issues with some multi-disc collections but there are editing tools to fix those.

It’s nice to be able to choose between the various versions of albums I have, including bootlegs. It will play FLAC files if you have them.

I just use Spotify paired with some local storage. You can add downloaded songs and create a playlist or just add songs to a current playlist and have it available on any device you want. Works well enough for me but I got out out of the music organization game a while ago as it was too time consuming. I pretty much just have one big, massive playlist I just shuffle through.
