"Should the Flames call up Dustin Wolf?" Hockey News
Quote:
“He’s one of the smartest goalies I’ve seen come through the pro ranks,” one Western Conference scout told The Hockey News. “Over the years, you saw Andrei Vasilevsky in Syracuse and you’re like, ‘Wow.’ You saw Thatcher Demko in Utica, and you’re like, ‘Wow.’ A lot of goalies don’t give you that ‘wow’ factor — Wolf gives you that ‘wow.’”
|
Quote:
Although it’s less obvious than expected, the best action is to keep Wolf in the AHL for now. Let him continue to play a big role for the Wranglers, who currently sit atop the AHL standings and look poised to make a serious Calder Cup run. He can share the crease with Markstrom, who is on the books at $6 million until the end of the 2025-26 season, and form an efficient tandem.

Not until the goalie coaching department gets a re-model. Keep him as far away from Flames development as possible for now.

Give him a game or 3 after we clinch home ice for the 1st round.

The answer to this question is no until you consider the real question at hand that's making us ask it.
Is Dustin Wolf the best goalie in the organization right now?
I think he probably is. It's a risk reward business, but the fact that he could probably be giving us at least .910 goaltending, it is pretty damn tempting to use him.

This environment is definitely not the best place for him to be this season.
Go win a bunch of games and bring home a title and try again next year.

Wolf is the same age as Matt Murray was in 2016.

I dunno, feels like rushing Wolf is the last thing the Flames should do.

Feels like Markstrom or Vladar would have to eat an injury before Wolf gets a call-up this year.... or next.
I think he would thrive in Sutter's shot volume/suppression system though. Of his 5 shutouts this year, in 4 of them he has faced 25 or under shots.

Not this year. Doesn’t make sense to throw him to the wolves (see what I did there)

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the Flames recalling Wolf. I don't think it's rushing when he's less than two months away from turning 22. He's played 99 AHL games, including playoffs, and is a superstar down there.
But selfishly, I find the Wranglers significantly more entertaining to watch than the Flames this season (and have watched them much more frequently as a result), so I would prefer to see Wolf stay down there and win a championship.

Like most things with Flames decision making. I agree that they should, but also know the Flames decision makers won't be doing it. They lost a 1st rounder on waivers and could have lost Kylington on waivers the prior season. They are stubborn to a fault and have a (I think outdated) view of development based on the mid 00s Detroit model where guys cook until they're 23 before they get a shot in the NHL.

Vasilevskiy, Hart, Price, Saros, Oettinger, etc.. all got games in at 21, and Wolf's putting up better numbers than all of them.
I don't see the harm. It may just provide the spark and stability this team needs - and he's certainly earned the look.

So you're sending down Vladar? Markstrom has a NMC. Or are you putting three goalies on the roster and then running short a D or F?
And the harm is that the Flames are routinely giving up excellent chances with little or no warmup for the goalies. Wolf would be thrown to - the wolves.
