The fact that you can install Windows on this will be the big game changer. Portable Steam library AND GamePass, plus the ability to throw emulators on it, this will instantly have the largest game library of any handheld console ever.

I assume that since this is an actual PC and not a streaming device like Nvidia Shield that they won't be prevented from having games available for it?

What's the battery life?

Lol maybe good as a PC replacement for a kid? Though I guess it's hard to take it to school and use, but with a dock and a keyboard/mouse/screen it's a PC.

EDIT: One of the videos said 2-8 hours. Portal 2 4 hours.

If Portal 2 is 4 hours, then Control would be maybe 2 hours at best. Seems fitting that this looks like a Game Gear, since it's going to have the battery life of one.

I'm not totally sold on the ergonomics of it yet but I'll wait for more impressions from people.

When are people thinking this would be useful as compared to a decent gaming laptop? Or is the argument just that you can't get a decent gaming laptop for the $800 canadian or so that this will cost?

I'd get one but I fear it would just collect dust like my PSP. I have a bunch of games that I've never got around to playing.

Did you even click the link? Base price is $500 Canadian, it's only $800 for the highest storage model. I think the $660 price for the 256GB model will be the sweet spot though, and yes you will not find a laptop capable of playing new games for that price

I know, but no one is buying the base price with that storage setup. So 660 or 800, plus the dock, which I imagine most people will want.

I can see a use for it if you want to use it on public transit or the like, or if you have a desktop but no laptop capable of running games. It is a tiny, non HD screen though, and very short battery life. I dunno, I'm skeptical.

You could also use it in the same way you use a Shield though, with the added bonus of being portable.

How do you mean? I use a shield as a device plugged into my TV that is a hub for media and also upscales source video to 4k. It's pretty portable if I ever wanted to unplug it, which I don't.

Do you mean for games? I guess, but do you think the hardware on board this thing will be able to effectively play anything demanding at a decent frame rate on a big HD screen?

The base model still has SD card expandable storage, I think you'll see a lot of people buy that model because of the attractive price and even with only 64GB of storage it will still be the ultimate indy game console. The Steam Deck doesn't have to play the latest triple-A games at 60fps to be an attractive option, there are literally thousands of great games on Steam that are older/less demanding that have never had a portable play option before

I thought I might have an OLED Switch ordered yesterday. Instead, nothing on that front but an order on this total out of no where device instead. Wild.
