Thankfully it hasn't happened to me and apparently it could mean a number of things like overheating or hardware issues. Sony is reporting that only 0.4% of sold units are reporting this issue which isn't terrible but it's still early. Hopefully it's just a few machines and they get them sorted out.

Haha, that didn't take long.

Hope companies get the hardware bugs worked out within the first 3 years this gen.

This is a Calgarian that looks to have the video card issue. It's not the HDMI as he checked when he took it out of the box.

Sony has slightly altered their advertising post launch;

Is it really a significant upgrade on the ps3?

LOL not really because I own a PS4. I'm hoping my PS4 isn't affected. I bought my PS3 at launch and it's still working today and that launch went very well as I don't remember any major issues. Maybe they tried too hard to get as many consoles made as possible as this is kind of a 180 from the PS3 launch. I don't think any of these issues are long term but it's one of those early adopter things.

Today no. In the next year or so absolutely. Graphics are undeniably better and the controller feels better and there's some neat new features. Launch games aren't that great combined with some of the initial hardware issues is probably enough reason not to get one if you are happy with your PS3 at the present time.

Is it really a big issue or is social media just a lot more prevalent than 7 years ago?

This is the exact reason you don't buy a new console in the first year of it being released. Let them upgrade all the hardware first, then buy it.

No way to actually know if the issue is widespread or about the industry norm for product failures. But that won't stop some people from picking up the pitchforks.

I would wait until next week and see what the media digs up. It's definitely an issue as it's happening to people local and all over but it's not happening to everyone as mine is fine although I haven't put in heavy hours given the last evening and all day today have been sports days. I think the problem is that some are saying that they Sony may not have replacement consoles for all the people with issues but I'm sure more light will be shed on it in the coming week.

Some of the games are.

Battlefield 4 is MUCH better on PS4 (and PC) than on PS3.

Killzone is pretty damn fantastic (gorgeous).

NBA 2K14 has been super excited for new-gen hockey games.

Call of Duty is a lazy cross-generation game. Very minor upgrade over current gen.

The streaming your gameplay stuff is extremely easy to use and a neat feature.

The failure rates are always going to be there with hardware, nothing out of the ordinary - you see this reaction with almost all devices now. The gaming community alongside social media definitely tend to make things seem much worse than they are. (although, the gaming community had it pretty rough last generation with the 360 failure rates being astronomical - but microsoft did the right thing and prepared them free of charge).

I find it funny that people are complaining about the launch line-up...it's easily the best set of launch titles a console has had across the board. Yes, a lot of them are cross-gen games - but specifically titles like BF4 and NBA2K14 are SO MUCH better on PS4, it's not even reasonable to compare them to the PS3 version. (I know people will argue "but Halo" and "but Mario 64" - but aside from those two games, the launch titles for both of those consoles were pitiful).

The one I got was perfectly fine as well. I'd definitely attribute part of the paranoia to the increased social media for sure though.

Sony felt a lot of pressure to drop the price after launching the PS3 and suggesting that people get a 2nd job to afford it. Add the pressure of beating the Xbox to market and I can easily believe that the first batch has quality issues.

Launch is no different then other tech launches, always going to be issues and now that social media had taken off we just hear more about it.

We would have heard the same thing for PS3 launch if twitter was as popular then as it is now. Would have been some great tweets about the RROD too.

Yeah, I remember when the PS3 launched, I had to wait for a month to read a review about its hardware in EGM. Because there was no internet. Way back in 2006.

It's not that there was no internet, social media was in it's infancy and individuals didn't have the outlet they have today.

In 2006 there was no twitter, and Facebook was still just a tool for college students.

Now if there is a faulty device that person can instantly share that in seconds. That is different then in 2006.

Anyone who gave a damn would be on gaming forums (or forums that discuss gaming, like here), on sites like Gamespot or IGN, and in chatrooms.

Perhaps filthy casuals had less means to gain info, but it certainly feels the same for us master race types.
