I think you have to look at their peers to accurately assess.
One thing about Gretzky, there were often seasons where he'd have more assists than anyone had points and certainly in his career he does have more assists than anyone ever had points and 50% more points than the next closest player.
Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in a season. When he first became a major league baseball player (as a pitcher, don't forget), the most home runs in a season was 11.

If we're going to list Messi and Ronaldo, why not Pele and Maradona?

If you need to list more than 1 guy from a sport, he's not in the conversation.
These guys should be peerless in their own sports. As much as I love Jordan, he's now borderline thanks to James.
Revised list parred down to the actual GOAT's in their respective sports:
Tom Brady
Wayne Gretzky
Babe Ruth
LeBron James
Michael Jordan
Muhammad Ali
Micheal Phelps
Roger Federer
Serena Williams
I left Jordan and James since that's a fluid situation. Could maybe say the same for Nadal.

Richard Hugh McCaw, he may not have invented modern openside play but he sure as hell perfected it.
14 years he was the first name on a game sheet for one of the best teams in the world.
88.5% winning percentage is pretty effing amazing.
While I am not a roundball fan, to leave Pele off the list is crazy town. If you ask anyone in the world who Pele was (even now) they will know the name.

Beating Rafael Nadal on clay over 5 sets is the hardest thing to do in sports. He has a record of 125-2 , and at the French Open he has a record of 100-2. He's won 13 French Open titles while playing the event 16 times (once he pulled out due to injury). The next highest French Open titles is Bjorn Borg with 6. Does that make him the GOAT across all sports, I dunno but it certainly adds his name to the discussion.

No it doesn't. Not even close.
The fact he's only GOAT at a single discipline in his sport and none of the others completely disqualifies him from any GOAT discussions.
It makes him borderline for even being included in the Tennis GOAT discussion.

I can't recall where I read it - but there was an article (or perhaps it was a documentary) that discussed Ruth basically taking a different approach to his swing - creating a different launch angle.
Basically prior to him - guys weren't trying to hit homers.

LeBron is severely underrated. Say what you will about Jordan and his days, but LeBron has won the ultimate prize with 3 different teams. Jordan needed Pippen and Rodman. LeBron’s teammates were interchangeable

Michael Schumacher - F1
Michael Phelps - Swimming? Unless we are just doing team sports.
Edit: Nevermind. Missed Phelps on the list

Willie Mays is the best baseball player of all time. He played the hardest position on the field, he played it at the highest possible level, hit 50 home runs as a CF, played until he was 42.

I don't think LeBron is underrated, IMO he's actually massively overrated due to recency bias.
My all time NBA starting 5 is:
C Kareem
PF Bill Russell
SF Larry Joe Bird
SG Jordan
PG Magic
And that's pretty much my top 5 all time NBA. And LeBron isn't better than any of them at those positions. He isn't even uniquely able to play multiple positions. Magic won his first title filling in for Kareem at centre.
And even though I grew up hating the Showtime Lakers, Kareem is the goat by a whisker over Magic. His career was insanely long by the standards of the time, Tom Brady is amazing for playing at 43, but Kareem played at 42 over 30 years ago! He was first team all NBA at the age of 39.
The skyhook was literally an unstoppable shot, and it hasn't been replicated in the 50+ years since Kareem started dominating with it. It was unstoppable even though everyone knew it was coming. And if you cheated to try to take away the skyhook, he would pick you apart with his passing.
He played forever. He won multiple championships. He was unstoppable offensively and played great defence.
Jordan is the goat for most people old enough to remember watching him. LeBron is the goat for most people too young to have watched Jordan.
Kareem is the forgotten goat because he dominated 40 years ago and retired 30 years ago. When he dominated, the NBA finals weren't even carried live, they were on tape delay. He dominated before cable sports channels.
Kareem is the goat.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

For me Sweetness is the GOAT RB in the NFL.
Had Barry Sanders stayed around he would be the GOAT and not even close.
