It's going to be a tribute to our warriors on the ice.

It may be expensive, but at least it sounds like it'll look cool.

Its a tribute to the brave men and women of the armed forces, so you cannot criticise it. If you hate the bridge, then you obviously do not support our troops. Why do you hate them so much?

there are several other pedestrian overpasses being constructed or planned all with a price tag of ~$16M; none of them have to cross the river, so this $22M price tag doesnt seem unreasonable

Sounds like a way to get the public to approve of it. Who would argue something that acts as a tribute to the military?
How does one have a helical coiled shape that lies horizontal? I'm not picturing what it's going to look like.

If it looks like that, it belongs in Vancouver wrapped in Zig Zags with an Olympic flame at one end.

I like the sounds of this design. In the long run the cost (which is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things - $5 billion ring road anyone???) will be well worth it.

Maybe they can work 9/11 and stopping terrorism into it. hehehe

OTOH, if I was in fact a veteran and this pathetic POS is what they think is a good idea to honor me I'd be demanding my money back.

Personally, I'd rather be honoured (from an aesthetic perspective) by a beautiful bridge designed by one of the world's greatest architects spanning the gorgeous Bow River than say a highway which soldiers are often honoured by. I think soldiers will be proud. I am also glad Memorial Drive was finally fixed up, much to the chagrin of the penny pinchers in town, who didn't think it was 'worth it'. We should honour soldiers with the best of what the city has to offer.
The Highway of Heroes - the 401 in Ontario.

It is the route taken when fallen soldiers go from Trenton to Toronto after coming home. It is also the most used freeway on the continent. I am proud of the decision to change the name.

Calgary could use more world-class architecture. I look forward to this bridge.

Coiled spring eh?
Did Watson and Crick fight in a war?
Maybe the design is simply to honour that great war weapon, the slinky.
