The story, the character's even the language was about as shallow as an episode of Flash Gordon from the 1930's, Cameron spent years working on the technology of the film and at most a weekend on writing the script

As someone living in Alberta lemme tell you those attitudes are still very much present. You can change some of the names, but the mechanisms of Settler Capitalism and the colonial imagination are still the same.

I don't doubt that but attitudes have changed since 1870 and will continue to change, the 'plot' behind Avatar was lazy and one dimensional, childishly simplistic

Can we assume the climax will consist of the bad guy with a spear screaming '“From hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee"?

'we're going to need a bigger boat!'

hopefully there is less of a good/evil divide and you see some of both on either side
it can be aimed at children but also represent mankind with some accuracy
if there are 4 more sequels planned they'll to make the story bigger and add a few more plot threads in there as well
it can't just be alien race and humans squaring off over something different each movie
or maybe I vastly overestimate Cameron and that's exactly what he has planned

'unobtanium' was some truly preposterous writing
earth's scientists would never..
sincerely hope lessons were learned from the first, because I'm taking a 3+ hour gamble on it this weekend

What we need is a mash-up Universe film between Avatar and Idiocracy.
"We need unobtanium and we're gonna get it! Everyone grab your AR-15s and Brawndo! Get those electrolytes pumping!! Its what plants CRAVE!!!"

It's hard to argue that in terms of box office.
It blew away the all time world wide and domestic records at the time. It is still the biggest world wide, and kept the domestic title for 6 years.
Gone with the Wind is the only other movie that could make a case if you adjust for inflation, but it's still probably way behind Avatar world wide. The Force Awakens would be the only other movie in the conversation since it has the domestic title, but is way behind world wide.

Angry sarcastic reviews are the best reviews. I love it when critics act like it was a personal insult that they got paid to sit through a movie they didn’t like. As if it’s an affront to their individual freedoms.

I heard something about the middle third playing like an ocean documentary
honestly with the visuals I think I'll enjoy that more than the blue people stuff
sounds like a James Cameron smorgasbord
hey, might as well throw all the poop at the wall for that RT score. enough just might stick
