I think they just didn't want the City lackies having anything to do with the project when they showed they didn't have the ability.

CMLC has done great work in the East Village.
CSEC wants to be a REIT - that will always be the rub on this project.

Oh great. Here we go again.
One thing I noticed with the new BMO expansion, the walk from the train station to the dome is not a straight shot anymore. Would suck on colder winter nights.

Nice to see the experience CAA Icon has in this area. Seems like a good choice to represent the City.

That's a really unfair fight. Why would you hamstring the city of Calgary like that?

Assuming you'll be able to go through walkways inside BMO once the building is done, no?

A Flames arena, a Wranglers arena, a Hitmen arena. Plus practice rinks and a holiday villa in Banff.

Did they ever get rid of those roads directly in-front of the arena in the latest mock ups ? I feel like this new stadium should be pedestrian walkway only with a road just for supply vehicles for the facilities. The mess of cars and pickups we would have with civilian access right at the front door doesn't feel like a good idea.

You are correct that they have done great work in the past, including the Riverwalk, central library, Simmons Building revitalization among others. However, those projects were designed years ago and the team at CMLC has almost completely turned over since then.
Recent CMLC projects including the Platform parkade, BMO expansion, and the first incarnation of the arena project have been extremely weak from an urban design perspective. I think they were in over their head in managing a project of that scale.
Bringing in this CAA firm to PM seems like a major positive for the project - for both the City and CSEC.

Agree with Zarley. CMLC has stagnated and their most recent projects have left a lot to be desired. If this new engagement process does not also result in a complete redesign of the previous arena rendering, then I hope it falls through. Was not impressed with what was first presented. The parkade attached to the new arena needs to go above all else.

With all the construction already going ahead in the area around the Dome, I feel like the new Event Centre is inevitable for both parties' sakes at this point.

Wait, the last design was CMLC's? Wasn't it released after CMLC had been removed from the project?

If the project involves a sea of asphalt parking it fails in my mind. It's got to have walkability and make it a third place destination.

I doubt the previously announced design will change much unless both sides agree to scale back the project.
They already invested money with the announced design, and with rising costs being the major issue it doesn't really make sense for them to start over on the design process and spend more money unless there is significant cost savings in doing so.
