The tweet rendering in Tapatalk died a while before this or Musk.

I remember it around the time that Musk turned off micro services.

Something definitely changed on the twitter side of things. Early tweets render fine in tapatalk - try opening this post in tapatalk and you'll see the tweet.

Twitter teetering on transaction? - UPDATE: Board agrees to sell Twitter to Musk
The problem dates back to 2021, for Tapatalk. It’s still working fine with the vBulletin service.

I just scrolled through the funny pictures forum, and found that this tweet renders fine in tapatalk:
Tweet from Nov 13
But this tweet doesn't:
Tweet from Nov 21
So something happened between Nov 13 and Nov 21, which is right around the time of drastic changes to twitter during Musk's takeover.

"Long-standing" can apparently mean "later this week" at Elon Musk's Twitter, as the company has changed its developer agreement to seemingly justify its banning of third-party clients. The change happened two days after a vague tweet about "enforcing long-standing API rules" without pointing to any.
As noted by Internet sage Andy Baio, a text comparison (diff check) of Twitter's developer agreement between the effective dates of October 10, 2022, and January 19, 2023, shows only one change besides the effective date: a new line added to the section "Restrictions on Use of Licensed Materials."

Except when is has to do with posters who communicate exclusively with tweets.

Tiktok's en####tification
Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.
I call this en####tification, and it is a seemingly inevitable consequence arising from the combination of the ease of changing how a platform allocates value, combined with the nature of a "two sided market," where a platform sits between buyers and sellers, hold each hostage to the other, raking off an ever-larger share of the value that passes between them.

new Twitter news
Twitter replaces its free API with a paid tier in quest to make more money
https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/2/23...e-announcement
The decision to remove free access to Twitter’s API follows the platform updating its developer rules to ban third-party clients, causing popular third-party Twitter apps like Twitterrific and Tweetbot to abandon the platform.
Many small developers have used Twitter’s free API access to create fun tools and useful bots like novelty weather trackers and black-and-white image colorizers which are not intended to earn income or turn a profit. As a result, it’s likely that many bots and tools utilizing Twitter’s free API access will need to charge a fee or be shut down. It would also impact third parties like students and scientists who use the platform to study online behavior and gather information for research papers.

Rather than support that eccentric weirdo and his toxic mayhem, I suggest giving Spoutible a go. It's in the pre-registered week, and so far (outside of huge initial server demands and some normal UX hiccups on the release of a new platform), it's a great successor to Twitter.
The site opens up next week for the general public. Give it a go if you're looking for an alternative and want that familiar Twitter experience but with far better content cntrol and bot/troll management.
Note: due to huge initial demand, the site is working slow but will ramp up in performance over the next few days.
