I don't know, maybe they changed some of the requirements. I spoke to three different people at AHS last night and they all said the same thing. There biggest concern was the bathroom, that my daughter couldn't have her own bathroom.

That's suprising to hear, as I don't think AHS has recently changed their protocols around this. What I would suggest is that despite what someone at AHS might "recommend", you're not legally required to isolate in that manner. Especially if it causes hardship (financially, emotionally, or otherwise).

Case in point, one of my kids had a close contact in her class. She was required to stay at home for 14 days, but her sibling (same school but different grade) had no restrictions and continued going to school as she had no symptoms. Nothing about staying in different rooms or anything like that either.

I can definitely appreciate the desire to limit a potential long term quarantine by moving to a hotel (I did over a month quarantine at home as the lone negative), but the move wont do you any good if your daughter tests positive- firstly because a hotel room is certainly going to be a much smaller space than even the most compact home, and you will be considerably increasing your chances of getting covid from her. And even if you were not to get it, you would be making every day in the hotel a new day of exposure, continually adding 14 days quarantine for yourself. And the question eventually becomes, after the infectious period of your daughter is complete, does she go home and you stay at the hotel? For you to go home as well at that point to start your quarantine would then risk exposing everyone else in the house and the cycle restarts.

Yes, that was a lot there, but the scenarios can get messy when little kids get covid. Imo, a parent going to a quarantine hotel with a child only makes sense when both the parent and child are confirmed positive- then you both just leave after 10 days and everyone is clear.

Sames here. Three kids with a total of 4 different close contact quarantines and in all cases all others in the house were free to continue all regular activities and never was there a mention of concerns of sharing rooms with the kid that was in quarantine.

I guess so, I am not sure we just went with what they said to do so my daughter and I are at the hotel currently. All 3 people I spoke to were very adamant about it being a legal requirement to not just isolate but quarantine. Also on my daughters negative result text message it says "If your test was negative but you have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 you must quarantine for 14 days from your last contact with them."

However, I will say that all 3 people I spoke to mentioned that they keep changing the requirements frequently and they all had to reference back to their latest information.

Certainly wouldn’t want to dispute what AHS told you, but you can consult their own guidelines online which clearly state that your daughter only needs to quarantine (stay at home, but doesn’t necessarily need to isolate). This is especially true if you have now received a negative result. Staying at an isolation hotel after a negative result would be the most extreme form of caution I have heard of (but perhaps a good idea if someone else in the house is severely immunocompromised).

Even if your daughter tested positive and you only have one bathroom, AHS can only recommend an isolation hotel- they certainly can’t insist it. They even have suggestions online on how to deal with only having one bathroom when someone in the house is isolating. Isolation hotels are only mandatory when flying in internationally.

I think there might be some confusion around "quarantine" versus "isolation". I've been using them somewhat interchangeably, but yes, you are required to quarantine (i.e. stay at home), but that doesn't mean you have to stay in a separate room (especially if you already have a negative test result!).

As for the text message that was sent -- "If your test was negative but you have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 you must quarantine for 14 days from your last contact with them." -- yes, that means they still have to stay at home for the full 14 days, but it doesn't mean they have to be isolated away from parents or any other siblings.

Yep, exactly. I learned the full extent of the terms back in Feb and was stunned when I learned I would not even be able to start my quarantine until my daughter was cleared. Didn’t clue into this concept until I had to experience it- makes sense though from a math and exposure standpoint.

I also think there is confusion on when you need to legally isolate vs just quarantine- I believe the only time you are required to self isolate is when you have a positive result (and are a self sustaining individual is a bit of an unwritten asterisk). You do not need to legally isolate for example while waiting for a test result after being a close contact- it is only recommended. You only need to legally quarantine in that situation.

See, I wish we would of had a better explanation. I tried to understand everything that was online and figured it would be best to just get it straight from AHS.
Oh well I guess what’s done is done.

Today was my dad's birthday. It was really hard for me today, probably the hardest day since the funeral. This whole week was tough and I'm not fully sure why, we've never been really into birthdays. I hate mine, personally.

I would bet it's because today made the reality of the loss unavoidable and turned you to thinking about it. People will experience that around major events like death and divorce.

Tolkien wrote about how Frodo would fall ill on the anniversaries of being stung by Shelob. Time heals trauma but trauma leaves a scar and a day like today might not get you next time, or it will get you a little bit every year and that's okay, it even normal.

Hang in there Acey.

You may even come to look forward to his birthday, Acey. I like my dad's (~18 years now since he died). My brother and I always get together for a beer. I have a pack of cigarettes of my dad's that I found after he passed away. I always light one up for his birthday even though I'm not a smoker. Nothing like smoking a decades old smoke, drinking a beer and thinking of your dad. I hope you find something like that you'll grow to enjoy on this anniversary. Things are still so fresh, so nobody expects anything to be easy for you right now. Take care, dude.

My first cousin, who is 8 months pregnant, has tested positive along with her husband. Both are physician's assistants in Texas and both got double Moderna early in the year, I think February. She has 2 children under 5 that we're awaiting word on. Very mild symptoms for everyone so far so all are likely positive.

I didn't think I would have to come back to this thread but... I can at least provide some anecdotes about how covid affects a double vaccinated 33-year-old late in pregnancy as it may be interesting.

Kinda wish this virus would leave my family alone.

Welp. My kindergartener tested positive yesterday. Woke up at 4am Monday morning crying because he had a headache and sore throat. Also had a mild fever. By the time 7am came he was totally normal with a very mild cough he often has anyways. He was running around and giggling with zero symptoms besides the cough. My wife started feeling unwell and so they both went and got tested. My son is still completely fine but now my wife has a wicked cough. Somehow, when the results came in my son was positive, my wife was negative. I thought there must be some mistake so we did a quick rapid test of everyone and my wife is still negative

A lot of false negatives have happened, even from the beginning of the pandemic.

A year ago, my parents tested negative on a Sunday (after being exposed on the Friday, and starting to "feel different"), and then re-tested on Thursday and both were positive then.

A coworker told me last week that he and his entire family are sick, but only 3/5 tested positive.

Give it a day or two. If your wife is ill, you already know what she has. Take care of everyone, and take any possible precautions for yourself and any others in the home.

I was a close contact and developed a small cough, but I tested negative. (I'm doubled vaxxed).

The following weak I had pain on my left when breathing, a wicked cough and a bubbling feeling when I breathed in. I went to the doctor and they sent me to the hospital to run tests to rule out a blood clot (it wasn't a blood clot). It ended up being fluid on my lungs, but they gave me another covid test because I was there anyway. That test came back positive.

So for whatever reason you can test negative and still test positive later.

This has been known for quite some time. Also, the cough you had prior to the negative test was potentially infectious. This has been one of the largest challenges in contact tracing and isolation; people can be infectious with very mild symptoms.

Last year we had some friends who had to quarantine for a really long time. Their son was a close contact and was isolating because his entire class had to isolate and were recommended to also get tested. So, they took him to get tested and he was positive. Asymptomatic. Not once in his two weeks of having to isolate did he display any symptoms. At that time if you lived with someone who tested positive you had to isolate for 14 days AFTER they were out of quarantine... Not one member of that family got sick or displayed any symptoms at all. They're pretty sure their son didn't have covid, but they were doing their due diligence. With frustrations.

We're taking full precautions and isolating. I'm fortunate to have access to rapid antigen testing so while I'm allowed to work in taking 5 days of and using the rapid antigen tests before I return. The only reason i don't think my wife is actually positive is because my other son was sick 10 days ago and was negative on both PCR and antigen and my wife started feeling ill before my now positive son and was antigen negative then as well. I think she has the cold my other son had 10 days ago.
