Seems like this thread gets more updates than the extreme weather thread. It's nuts.

Kind of OT, but part of the overall discussion I think. U.S.A. was recently ranked 129 out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index. Lower than places like Haiti, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Nicaragua. The criteria includes things like criminality, homicides, access to weapons, jailed population, violence, and instability among others.

In case anyone is curious, Canada is #12 and considered within the first tier (the top 15 countries as indicated by dark green on the map linked below).

1 Iceland
2 New Zealand
3 Ireland
4 Denmark
5 Austria
6 Portugal
7 Slovenia
8 Czech Republic
9 Singapore
10 Japan
11 Switzerland
12 Canada
13 Hungary
14 Finland
15 Croatia

U.S.A is in the same tier as countries like Mexico, Brazil, Iran, India, Columbia, Ethiopia, Turkey, Myanmar, and Venezuela.

In fairness it looks like Azerbaijan beat them on a rounding policy!

Albeit which is technically correct....

The US is apparently already up to 39 mass shootings this year...

No one has ever been able to give me a good reason why living the the US would be superior outside of relatively more affordable homes.

But even then, quality of life goes so, so, so much deeper than that.

That probably is what happens when you have daily mass shootings, elementary schools get shot up, and your society still can’t agree on policy to try and stop that. Somehow.

I know that the chances are very small but those rare times I’m in the U.S. it is in the back of my mind that there might be crazy, gun-toting person nearby.

Might be? I think it's pretty much a guarantee. The only uncertainty is if they are going to act on it that day.

There are swaths of American society that think there is no problem to solve.

And the parts that agree there is a problem think that armed teachers are the solution.

The commonsense folks (less guns = less death) are a minority in the United States.

I'm usually pretty glib on here, but this is an unsettling topic.

I disagree that it's likely that there is a crazy person with a gun if I go into a supermarket or a coffee shop, for example. There may be guns, but most gun owners are not lunatics.

Yeah, but therein lies part of the problem.

Normally people arent complete lunatics...but all it takes is one bad day and a little push...

And then if those people happen to be packing heat?

This exactly. If I were to have a bad day and want to throw a temper tantrum, what happens? Probably some poor worker has to deal with me being short with them rather than pleasant. They at least get to go home and rant about that ####### at work today.

In the States right now? More than 1 person may not get to go home at all.

It's absurd.
