Also, can we kill this awkward thread and poll and start a new one since he's at 800 now?
Ovechkin's Chase of 894 or something.

65 goals is not insignificant, but if anyone can do it at 38+ it's Ovi. Heck, he might just score all 65 in one season to get it done an over with, just like he did with 800, 801 and 802.
|
I could see him playing until he is 44. Even if he drops down to 15 to 20 goals a year in his 40s, that's still better than most NHLers.

Ovechkin has lead the league in goals 9 times.
Bobby Hull = 7
Esposito = 6
Gretzky/Howe/Richard/Conacher = 5

Gretzkly only led 5 times? Almost makes you wonder how he's on top of the all-time goal scoring list. Almost. It just feels like he should have led the league more seasons.

Those 5 seasons were:
92
87
73
71
62
385 goals. But it still seems crazy that Gretzky managed 509 goals in his other 15 seasons, more than all but 41 other players.

I think the "Will Ovie beat Gretzky" conversation got serious when a 33 year old Ovie scored 51 goals and was about 236 goals away from the record. It seemed like that may have been the end of Ovie's peak, but he may be able to miraculously drag himself to Gretzky's record if he can avoid fading too quickly and injury. Since then, he's scored 151 goals in 233, hit 50 in a season again + Richard trophy and it seems impossible for him to miss now.
Will we have to put an asterix next to his numbers in 15 years when we finally discover the mix of protein powder, HGH, stem-cell juice, ancestral tenants and whatever else those soviet super scientists have been cooking up? What are the odds that he's doing this cleanly? How could he resist the temptation?

We can talk about this in 15 or so years when you can prove that he has taken something. Bring it up now accuse someone with something you cannot prove is beyond silly!

So you're accusing him of steroids because he is doing what he has done his whole career?
And what the heck is the bolded. Nvm figured it out you mean living like liver king and eating raw animal parts.
Man some people are into conspiracy theories but you are something else.

What's more naive? Assuming the 37 year old 6'3, 240 lb Russian hockey player with ~3,500 career hits is still operating near peak performance is doing it clean or doing it dirty? There is little to no historical precedence for this kind of thing. Most precedence would indicate that a beat-up body with lower natural testosterone would perform significantly worse. Why pretend like there no place for this in the discussion at all?
Say you had a crystal ball you could look into that gave you a definitive answer: What odds would you put on Ovie doing this 100% clean? Russians slip performance enhancing drugs to their athletes all the time, often without them knowing: "time for your vitamins, boys". I recently listened to an interview with Islam Makhachev, UFC 155 lb champ and Russian, and as a youth he was given all kinds of stuff by russian sporting officials and he always just took whatever was given and it's crazy how strong this guy is now. Ovie could have been juiced to the gills at 14 without him ever knowing it and he'd first in line for all their bleeding edge stuff now.

Pictured: 44 year old man powered by ancestral tenants (update: turns out ancestral tenants were testosterone replacement therapy)

A very little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Oh well, this will be an entertaining de-rail.
Is Lebron a Soviet agent, too? (he is on track to take the NBA scoring crown this year at age 38, still playing at a very high level)

Open your eyes man. Lebron has some very Russian/Slavic physical characteristics.
Definitely a Soviet sleeper agent.

In fairness....if he was a Soviet Sleeper Agent absolutely nobody would see that coming.
In its own strange way it'd be brilliant.

Sad news as I just saw Laviolette speaking to reporters saying that OV is going to be out for at least a week as he's gone back home to Russia to care for a family member. Hopefully they recover and OV can return soon.
