I don't think we should be monday morning quarterbacking the team selection. Homan and Morris should have made the playoffs for sure but who's to say the other mix doubles teams would have done any better?
It's not like Homan/Morris got destroyed. They were in it till the very end.

Not criticizing the curlers, just discussing the process. Obviously a tournament is the best way to determine a representative. But when that tournament was cancelled, I think they could have made an exception in exceptional circumstances.

I just saw an interview on CBC with the ski jumpers and it was interesting to learn about their back story, training struggles and lack of financing. They sounded pretty critical of the funding model and support that they have recieved from Canada. It makes their medal even more impressive.

This may be one of the most captivating medals Canada will win at these Olympics!

Curling Canada should be criticized, but really any team we sent could've met the same fate as Homan/ Morris. The thing is though we have some very dedicated mixed doubles teams in this country who were brushed aside because curling Canada could not find a way to put the tournament together. I do not have a problem with not being able to compete in both mixed and 4 person, as preparation and dedication are different for each event (Rachels' sweeping). Morris and Homan are only there because they didn't qualify in the 4 person events. Curling Canada needs to move the qualifying up and determine the our reps much sooner. This would allow proper prep time for both mixed doubles and 4 person teams.

Yes, and the world's gotten better. IIRC, mixed doubles was announced to debut in 2018 fairly late in the process, maybe in 2016? So countries, including Canada, really only had 2 years to prepare. And perhaps Morris and Lawes won on pure talent. But 4 years later, countries train and have specialists. Bruce Mouat, the best player in the world right now, is barely going to sneak a bronze in this event.

As it should be.
I would even argue that MacKenzie Boyd-Clowes is one of Canada's best known athletes in Europe.

Yeah I am OK with criticizing the process. No Homan/Morris didn't get destroyed but a 5-4 record is not great in this sport for Canada. Had they not gotten very lucky against the Czechs, they'd have a losing record.
Those two gave it everything they had so I'm not criticizing their effort or prep. But as i said in previous posts, a clearer game plan and approach might have helped. Canada sent the two best shotmakers it could come up with, both of whom are alphas and it didn't work.

The men’s 1000m short track final had to be one of the stupidest races I’ve ever seen. It was stopped halfway when a skate blade fell off onto the ice and they restarted. It turned into an endurance race with skaters trailing off at the halfway point and the two clearly gassed leaders, a Hungarian and Chinese, basically wrestled to the finish line with the Hungarian disqualified. Took some legitimacy away from the event and raised more questions about the officiating.

That's the sport. It's happened before and it'll happen again.
And there is nothing wrong with the officiating.

That sounds crazy. I watch a lot of speed skating but I've never seen anything like that happen. I thought the rules were that the official could only stop the race during the first lap. Having an equipment failure and restarting because of that makes no sense at all.

I laughed at that too. "I know he's tall."
Colleen ripped Homan 4 years ago too.

The Norwegian team won bronze 4 years ago and the next day they wanted to get back to the Olympics

The rule your talking about refers to falls and interference before the last cone of the first curve.
The referee is allowed to re-start any race, at any time, when something happens that may affect the end result (like a guy's skate blade breaking off).

I just watched the race. I can understand stopping the race from a safety perspective now. That definitely makes sense. The only thing I would argue would be allowing for an equipment change and the impacted skater to take part in the restart. I think in that case they should be out.

Made sense to stop the race for safety but I don't get how the impacted skater got to continue. Your equipment broke and you fell over, that's it you're out.
Also was stupid to restart from the beginning making it a 1500m race. Needed to restart with 5 laps to go or something like car racing where the skaters stay in order and restart on a green flag.
