If that’s the end of Matt Stajan as a Flame, or an NHL Player, I would like to say that it was an honour to see him wear a Flames Jersey, and an honour to have him as a Calgarian.
Please fellow posters and fans post his hilights, specifically game 6 vs Vancouver and 9-1 vs Edmonton.
Also share great stories and memories.
I’m sure Matty and his family will remain a huge part of the Calgary community for years to come!

It sure looked like tonight quite possibly was his last game. I didn't notice who it was but someone grabbed the game puck and tossed it to Stajan. The majority of players also gave him hugs as he came off the ice.

Ok, I'll be the first to look like an A-hole.
Congrats to Stajan on a long career and over 1000 NHL games. Thanks for a couple great moments as a Flame.
Now lets move on and not have him part of the organization in any way...
At the time of the Phaneuf trade I was so, so disappointed in the return. I never expected at the time that Stajan would go on to spend so many years with the team while Phaneuf would be bouncing around failing to be much of impact player. Even though I'm sure the Flames could have gotten a much better haul out of that trade, Stajan has been the piece that stuck and has been a solid part of this team for a long time. Stripping away the circumstances of how he was acquired, he has just been a solid player for the Flames through thick and thin over many seasons. Deserves appreciation from the fans and organization.

I'm curious as to why you think that.

All in all I'm much happier having had Stajan than an overpaid, overrated Dion.
For a team that lacks character, Stajan is a standup guy, we should be disappointed if this is the end for him and wish nothing more than that we'd acquired him when he was younger.
Its not his fault he got old. I have it on good authority that it happens to everyone.
He has been nothing but a loyal player and a dedicated part of the community.
Stajan!

great character guy and veteran presence in the locker room. If this is indeed the end of his career, I hope there's a role for him within the organization.
The flames paid this guy 26.5m over eight seasons, during which he put up 175 points. That is terrible value. Not once did he hit the 20 goal plateau during his time with Calgary. His best season was 31 points.
My favourite part of Matt Stajan is the guy played 1000 games, but only 17 post season games. He made the post-season three times in fifteen seasons and got out of the first round once!
He perhaps has one or two moments worth remembering over those eight seasons with the flames. Perhaps people like his nice guy persona, or his post-game interviews or that people say hes a good teammate. Forgive me, but I'm not going to celebrate the guy and his incredibly mediocre on-ice accomplishments over 1000 games.

You're attributing a lot of team performance issues to a 3rd line centre.
When Stajan was sent out to do his job he did it and did it well.
He was always a trusted and loyal soldier. Its not his fault this team didnt win playoff rounds.
We can take the same criteria and go after Kipper and Iginla and it would be just as disingenuous. Its still a team game.

There should perhaps be a separate thread made for the knuckleheads that feel a need to trash a guy in a thread pretty clearly titled to celebrate him.
Good job doing what the team asked of you, Matt. Beauty series winner against Van. Congrats!
