I'm not sold on Pageau, smaller winger/center who just hasn't exploded like you would hope and has taken a pretty large step back this year on a team that is playing poorly. A fresh start might be just what the doctor ordered but it he could continue to disappoint and prove to be a flash in the pan type player.
I don't think he was ever going to be anything more than a 3rd line center, and fills that role quite well. He is good defensively, he wins faceoffs and he can contribute offensively with 30-40 points a season.

depends on what you are looking for... if you are looking for a complimentary piece with some potential upside, then a guy like Pageau would fit the bill... and he wouldn't be super expensive in terms of either acquisition cost or future salary expectations.
Hoffman is a primary piece, and would expect to be compensated that way as well as having a much higher acquisition price.
I like Hoffman, i just am not sure what the flames are willing to give up to get him...
i would not be opposed to trading Brodie, based on the reports of Andersson looking close to NHL ready and additionally it being a position of depth in the organization...
Backlund is a big question right now, and the hope is that somethings are getting answered behind the scenes (ie what is Backlund's cost/length of contract demands)... you don't want to trade backlund, but if his ask is too rich, then you might have no choice but to move him before the deadline unless you are willing to roll the dice that you can sign him prior to UFA...

Interesting situation for the Jackets to handle because they're likely a buyer, not a seller, so what do you with a pending UFA who wants out when you're trying to win now? Not ideal.
I don't normally like when players ask for trade but i feel bad for what went down in JJ's personal financial life. I think i read that out of the $5 million he makes this year he only gets $200,000. The rest goes to creditors. Hope he gets his trade to someone that wants him long term.

On Spezza being a healthy scratch for DAL, as @OvertimeScottB notes, it’s been framed as a one off, a la Brent Seabrook. Still, it’s bound to get people talking about his future in DAL:

Worth noting is Spezza has a full NMC and a modified NTC (10 teams he can be traded to) but it’s really more like a full NTC. DAL can only trade Spezza in a specified window each year. Next window opens up 48 hours after the 2018 Stanley Cup ends and closes on Sept. 1, 2018.
“Probably a better option would be on the wing but, in the situation we’re in, it’s not possible,” Bergevin said. “In a perfect world, if we had that No. 1 centre, that guy who can make plays, a high-end centre, (Drouin would) probably be on the wing.”
Who's fault is that Bergevin? Instead of working towards fixing that, you trade a blue chip D prospect for a mediocre bust potential winger, and force him at center. How is this guy employed?

Dreger now says in addition to the previously reported 1st, prospect, and conditional pick, the Sabres also want an additional roster player for Evander Kane.
