So congrats to anyone that bought a videocard in the last 6 months. The recent speculation boom in blockchain and the RAM shortage means buttcoin weirdos have had the cumulative effect of there now being literally 0 mid to high grade cards available anywhere.
Seeing every card out of stock at MemEx is bizarre amd creepy.

Yeah. Pretty annoying. Was going to do another gaming build now need to wait. Used prices are insane.
Newegg will occasionally get something in stock but you pretty much have to check every half hour to actually buy it in time. Someone I work with did this and eventually ordered a 1080TI.
Was already tired of hearing all the buzz around blockchain crap and now it's created another hardware shortage. I hope every cryptocurrency fails tomorrow

That is what boggles my mind, if they just took the money they spent on the mining rig and bought currency directly they would make so much more than trying to mine it.

Me and a coworker were just watching a video on mining. Miner spent 12000$ on a rig, after 6 months if I recall he said he made 8000$. He mentioned that the value of the currency he was mining had tripled in that time. He never did mention that he could have made 24000$.

Is that subtracting electricity costs from the equation? I assume he spiked up his energy use running a mining rig 24/7.
Either way, this whole thing is dumb and I feel bad for anyone who just wants to play some games.

Even if you have decent cooling, how long can you realistically expect a mining computer to last before parts start needing to be replaced? Seems like running 24/7 like that would burn things out pretty easily. I just don't understand how it's worth it.

I mean, it's probably dece if you want to buy amphetamines or an AR with a grenade launcher attachment, but turning into fiat currency is the real trick.

Depending on your motherboard/chipset, your PCI-E 4x/1x might share a lane with a SATA device, so you might want to check you don't have lane traffic.

So I don't think it's any of these things. I think one of the new Windows 10 updates pooched by Xbone controllers because my DS4 works fine and I have no issues with freezing when it's connected. Going to try replacing the batteries on the Xbone controllers tomorrow night and see if that makes a difference, although I'm pretty sure I already tried that.

I work on the road a lot so I'm planning on building a mini-ITX PC so I bring it around easier and game in hotel rooms. Other than sports games the PS4 isn't doing it for me anymore.
Any suggestions for cooling though? I'll be putting an i3 8350k in the little guy and most cpu coolers won't fit, so I'm guessing liquid is my only real option here. No experience with them myself, how do you mount the fans? Just wherever you find space.
I'm thinking of getting the case first so I can take a look and measure things out a bit, but heat in such a small space is my main concern so any advice is appreciated. Plan on putting my 1070TI that I currently have in there then getting a 1080TI for my home build (if prices and inventory levels for them ever get realistic again)

Just put in a GeForce 1060 GTX in my computer (was previously using the default GPU), and now I get intermittent screen flickering when I am using Chrome (specifically Facebook), and sometimes when I am not.
Anyone have ideas what the issue may be? Drivers? Resolution? Refresh rate?

1. Update your Video Drivers
2. Ensure your resolution and refresh rate are set to your native mode(s) for your monitor
3. Clear your browser cache
4. Check what extensions are running, they may be using Software Mode or might need to be re-installed because of the new GPU
5. Turn on or turn off Hardware Acceleration in Chrome

Seeing the price hike and scarcity of video cards and power supplies makes me very happy I decided to build back in November. Damn miners.

If I upgrade the RAM in this computer which is installed 2 banks of 3 modules, do I need to buy 3 sticks and put them all in the same bank or can I get two 4GB sticks?
I did a scan using the Crucial tool if that helps anything.
Thanks in advance!!

You can do two sticks. Reviews from the i7-920 era showed small differences between dual channel and tri-channel modes. You might just consider getting three sticks now since DDR3 memory will probably get scarcer and scarcer over time, making it difficult to add more memory if you find you need it later on.
