Martin Pospisil also continues to dominate the USHL. 3a in a 6-4 loss.

6gp 3g 9a 13pts 10pim +4

Pospisil is playing disciplined and at time of posting was tied for 2nd in the USHL for points.

Pospisil's points per game is 1st and matched by some guy named Jack Hughes, the projected 1st OA pick in the 2019 draft

edit: Pospisil was added an assist last night

Pospisil scored a shorthanded goal and picked up an assist in a 4-2 loss.

At time of posting he leads the USHL in points, assists, and points per game. Pospisil is on a 7 game point streak

Emilio Pettersen picked up another 2 assists in a 3-3 tie game.

2 points/game is a pretty great way to start a college career

Unfortunately Koumontzis failed to pick up any points this weekend.

This Petterson kid has some real skill. Putting up points is one thing, but the skill is shining through on these points he’s getting.

Denver didn't play this weekend, so no points for Petterson. He still leads Denver and all NCAA freshmen in points.

MSU played two games this weekend, winning both over Cornell. Mattson was scratched for Saturday's game. He still has no points through 3 games played.

ASU is off to a strong start this season. They played two games this weekend against Nebraska-Omaha, winning both. Koumontzis had one assist on Friday and four on Saturday. All were on the PP. Koumontzis has 7 points in 8 games and is tied for third in points on the team.

The Sun Devils currently have a 6-2 record and have nearly matched their total number of wins for the entire season last year, which was 8. They have already doubled up their win total from 2015-16, which was their first season in NCAA Division 1. Two years ago, they had 10 wins, so barring a total collapse, this will be their best season ever.

---------

In other NCAA news, Harvard played their first game of the season on Saturday. Adam Fox had 1 goal and 4 assists in a 7-6 OT loss to Dartmouth.

Pospisil with a goal and an assist last night in a 4-2 win. It makes it 3 straight games where he put up 1g 1a. It also means Pospisil is on a 12 game point streak because he hasn't failed to put up at least 1 point in every game so far this season.

12gp 7g 16a 23pts +6 31pim

Pospisil still leads the USHL in points by 4.

No points yesterday for Emilio Pettersen in a 5-2 win. It marks the first time in his NCAA career that he was held pointless.

5gp 2g 6a 8pts

Pettersen is 3rd in points by NCAA freshmen and 1st in points/game

Likewise Koumontzis was held pointless yesterday.

9gp 1g 6a 7pts

Koumontzis is currently is tied for 4th in NCAA freshmen scoring

Mitchell Mattson still looking for his first NCAA point after 4 games.

A big three point game tonight for Pettersen. He scored the tying goal late in the third and set-up the OT game winner. Denver remains undefeated with a 5-0-1 record.

Mattson was a healthy scratch again on Saturday. MSU lost their game 4-1.

ASU made team history defeating the previously-undefeated Penn State, 4-3 in OT. It is ASU's first ever win against a top-10 ranked team. It raises ASU's record to a very-impressive 7-3-0 (all three losses have come against top-10 opponents). Koumontzis did not have any points in the game.

My favorite part about him is he grew up as a Flames fan. Very slim chance he takes the NCAA loophole to sign with another team if he continues to shine and progress in North America.

Pospisil could be a diamond in the rough...a rough diamond but a diamond nonetheless. Really like his size, skill and mean streak.

From what I understand the USHL is similar to the AJHL. It is a youthful league with lots for 16, 17, and 18 year olds, who once they are done school and if they are good enough, transition into NCAA hockey, which is an older league with more condensed talent.

USHL is a Tier I hockey league, with player ages ranging from 16 to 20. Typical level of play is around the level of a Canadian Major Junior league like the WHL or QMJHL, although scoring tends to be lower because there are less 19 and 20 year old high-end scorers. In addition, a lot of the best US prospects play together for the US NTDP, so again the highest-end star talent tends to be diluted.

Since the USHL is considered an amateur league by the NCAA (the CHL - OHL/WHL/QMJHL - is considered a pro league), when high-end scorers are old enough to play college hockey, they usually get recruited to do so. So you had Gaudreau play in the USHL at age 17 and get recruited to play in the NCAA Division I at age 18. The NCAA, which is a college hockey league, is split up into divisions, but usually only Div I players make it to the pro level.

There are still twenty year olds in the USHL, but it's probably less culturally acceptable to take gap years to play hockey in the states than it is in Canada. Either way, you'll still have a guy like Joe Pavelski who played in the USHL at age 19 and then graduated to the NCAA at age 20. This tends to happen because a lot of US hockey players are only playing high school hockey through to age 17 or 18, and the USHL is a good stepping stone between high school hockey and college hockey.

In the case of the NCAA, typical player ages range from 20 to 25-ish. The 18 and 19 year olds who are successful are usually the really special NHL prospects, guys like McAvoy, Gaudreau, Eichel, Connor, Larkin, Toews. More typically younger players will be redshirted - which means they practice with the team but are basically healthy scratched until seniors graduate. A few quality young players are stuck in the limbo between redshirting and instant star status - that's where you have a guy like Jankowski in his teens who was playing some bottom six minutes but generally just treated differently from the graduating seniors in terms of ice time.

So on that note, because the NCAA is an older league, the younger guys who succeed are essentially succeeding against grown men. In the USHL and CHL, a successful player is playing well against his agegroup peers, but an 18 year old dominating the NCAA is usually doing so against physically mature 22, 23 year olds. For instance Garnet Hathaway and Austin Czarnik were both 22 years old in their senior years of college. Spencer Foo played half his senior year as a 23 year old.

But that's just the better players. How about a twenty year old graduating from the USHL who is entering his freshman year at 21? He's probably closer to "average age" than anything in the NCAA. In the USHL or CHL, the average age is probably closer to 18.

Finally the NCAA has only 35-40 games per season whereas the USHL has around 70. So players play more games in the USHL. It means more experience. But the flip side is that NCAA players have more off-time to spend in the weight room. This could help future professionals bulk up to be readier for the pro game. When Jankowski was drafted he weighted around 170lbs which at 6'4 made him a twig. He added around 40lbs during his four years of college hockey which I don't think would have been as easy to do playing a heavier schedule. But also means he is developmentally not as experienced as some of his age group peers.

The US equivalent to the AJHL would be the NAHL, which is the US Tier II league.

ASU just misses their first ever appearance on the USCHO.com top-20 rankings: https://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-mens-poll/

With a strong showing this weekend against MSU, they might be able to make the jump.

Denver is the only undefeated team in the nation, but that's only good enough for 5th in the poll. They have had a relatively weak schedule so far and have only played one game on the road.

TSN has announced some college games for Nov and Dec (all times ET)

http://collegehockeyinc.com/articles...in-2018-19.php

The ones with Flames prospects:

Emilio Pettersen:
Sat., Nov. 10 Denver at St. Cloud State 7 p.m. TSN.ca/TSN App
Fri., Nov. 16 Minnesota Duluth at Denver 9 p.m. TSN2/TSN.ca/TSN App
Sat., Nov. 17 Minnesota Duluth at Denver 9 p.m. TSN.ca/TSN App

Mattson:
Fri., Nov. 23 Michigan State at Minnesota 8 p.m. TSN.ca/TSN App
Sat., Nov. 24 Michigan State at Minnesota 8 p.m. TSN.ca/TSN App
Sat., Dec. 8 Michigan State at Wisconsin 8 p.m. TSN.ca/TSN App

Not surprising that no ASU games were picked up by TSN. Still a fledgling program with not a large fan (ratings) base.

Pettersen scored his 4th goal of the season tonight, but Denver lost to St Cloud State, 4-3. It was their first loss of the season.

ASU defeated MSU, 5-4. Mattson was again a scratch for the Spartans. Koumontzis was kept off the score sheet. It was the Sun Devils' 8th win of the season, which matches their total for all of last season.

All of the Flames college prospects' teams are in action tonight with live streaming available.

Denver is playing St Cloud State, streaming on TSN.ca. The game is tied at 3 early in the third. So far, no points for Pettersen.

ASU is hosting MSU tonight. The game is just starting. The live stream is here: https://pac-12.com/live/arizona-state-university

It looks like Mattson is scratched for his third consecutive game (and for the first time this season, both games in a weekend series).

St Cloud scored the only goal in the third period and defeated Denver, 4-3.

ASU continued their strong start with a 2-0 win over MSU, improving to 9-3-0. No points for Koumontzis. Mattson did not play.

Next week, ASU is shipping up to Boston for two games against Adam Fox and Harvard.

Speaking of Fox, he's off to a strong start, with 12 points (2G/10A) in 5 games. The Crimson are having the same problem that was common for them last year, an inability to win games. They finally got their first win of the season on Saturday after starting the season with a 0-2-2 record.

For the first time since joining the NCAA Division 1 in 2015, Arizona State is ranked in the top-20 of the USCHO Weekly Poll, coming in at #18: https://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-mens-poll/

After dropping both its games this weekend to #2 St Cloud State, Denver dropped 2 spots, from 5 to 7.

Another weekend in the books...

Michigan State dropped both their games to Notre Dame. Mattson was again scratched for both games. I'm not sure if he's injured or just not able to crack the lineup.

Denver split their weekend series against Minnesota-Duluth. They won 2-0 on Friday and lost in OT on Saturday, 4-3. Pettersen had one assist on Friday. Although he has cooled off recently, he still leads the team with 13 points in 10 games played.

Arizona State travelled to Boston to take on Harvard and split the weekend. Harvard won 4-1 on Friday and ASU won 3-2 in OT on Saturday. Koumontzis was again held pointless in both games. Saturday's win was ASU's 10th win of the season, which ties their team record for most wins in a season.

Adam Fox keeps on trucking, with 1G/1A on Friday and 1A on Saturday. He still has at least one point in every game this season for Harvard. His 15 points leads the team. In fact, he has more assists than anyone else has points. If he keeps this up, it's really hard to imagine him going back for his senior year, which should make the Hurricanes happy.
