Calgary selects (D) Juuso Valimaki 16th Overall
Smooth skating defender w/excellent hockey IQ who will push the pace & jump into the attack

A country with a population of 5 million has 3 D picked in the first 18 of the first round. Remarkable.

Valimaki looks like a player that if he hits, will be a guy in the mould of Hjalmarsson. Quality 3/4 guy. Nothing to shake a stick at. His stride looks like it could use some adjustments, but it's not a big thing to fix. I'd rate him as the 2nd best defensive prospect in the organization behind Andersson currently.
I suppose that the Flames are going to go the Nashville/Anaheim route of D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D and figure out the scoring some other way.

I like it. Top 4 D are worth more than wingers in trades anyway

Well to be clear he said they were considering taking a swing at a player with a high ceiling.
Maybe that player didn't fall to them or they like Valimaki enough that they felt they didn't need tot ake the risk.
Maybe they do think Valimaki has a high ceiling

Looking at the numbers, it looks like a good pick.
He also has nice size. Probably a stupid question, but any chance he makes the team next season?

Would be a big surprise if he did. Most likely two years from becoming pro.

Zero
Needs to fill out. Looks very lanky despite his weight.

Honestly having a lot of D in the system is fantastic. Flames can always trade one for a forward another time.

Probably not. He is probably 1-2 years away so not a project by any means

Welcome. It's a good pick.
I think this is the guy Flames Draft Watcher predicted we'd pick.

The highlight was his Mother. So proud of her boy. Welcome to the Flames, Juuso.
