Well, you seem rather tech savvy so I don't need to tell you that the tablet pc has been around long before the iPad's launch. At best I would say the iPad has brought attention to a category of device that's been around for a decade or more depending on how you define the tablet pc category.

You can't deny that the iPad has refreshed interested in the design and popularity of tablet PCs, but I haven't seen anything written that really sells me on it being "a whole new category of its own".

How can it be a new category of device when it’s clearly just another Von Neumann machine?

It does seem like the author may have made his own divisions in the world of tech products. Tablets have existed before and they do exist now that aren't the iPad, so I guess it's not a different category of it's own.
I remember my family being an early dvd adopter. $700 for our first one and there was one rack at blockbuster with rentable titles.

Not sure how you'd come to that conclusion. Apple is nothing short of militant when it comes to their release dates being on yearly cycles. Spring/summer almost 100%.

I think there is a bit of a push by some in the media to draw a distinction between a 'tablet' and a 'slate.'
The 'slate' being a multi-touch device with a custom operating system and smaller form factor than a tablet.
It's a pretty fine distinction though.

My mom works for the Town of Okotoks and is going to use her OT $$ from the election to buy an iPad. I'm really excited because I'll get to play with it.
Also, it really goes to show (anecdotally, but still...) that the people buying iPads aren't your typical early adopters - my mom is anything but.
Of course I am a little ashamed that my mom is beating me to anything in tech, but she has a job so it's not really a fair competition.

This article says it the best (prelaunch)

All this will have come about because Apple have done the R&D and released a product that’s been instantly derided as ugly and not what people want. If I were Steve Ballmer today, I’d be splashing out on an extra skiing holiday.

The only reason i like to poke fun is because i was one of those people that just didn't buy into the idea. I said before the launch that if the iPad was just a big iPod Touch I'd be greatly displeased. I didn't even realize how much I'd love it.
Just watched a really good TED talk by Malcolm Gladwell on how people aren't actually good at realizing what it is they want. His example was that if you ask somebody what they want in a coffee, most will say they want a rich, dark roast. In reality however, the majority of people want their coffee weak and milky. Perhaps the ipad is just weak and milky, but it seems to be what the people want.

And that's why Steve Jobs is so effective. He makes you -want- his products for your lifestyle, even if you don't know why you want(need) it!

This article came out today.
iPad sales disappoint investors:

Although the 4.19 million iPads sold in the fiscal fourth quarter fell short of Wall Street's target of around five million, analysts said sales should ramp up in the holiday quarter as Apple resolves supply hitches.
