I attended my community association's planning and development committee meeting the other day and 75% of the meeting was angry ranting about the city 'pushing their agenda', densification, lack of parking, basement suites, the former guidebook, and general nimbyism. We also got to hear rants about electric vehicles and how they'll all catch fire and "we need to stop densification because think of the children!".
And they wonder why they can't get P&D committee members to stick around. Sigh.

Cool local toy store The Discovery Hut is opening a Market Mall location "this fall" according to their website.
I didn't realize that Discovery Hut is a local company. That's good news. They are good for toys and games.
Related: Toys R Us (and Babies R Us) is opening in Brentwood soon as well. They are taking over the space where Bed Bath & Beyond and/or Buy Buy Baby was.
The name "Buy Buy Baby" still makes me so irrationally annoyed. Just horrible. Good riddance.

Discovery Hut is a really cool and unique toy store that's also in Chinook and Crossiron but their prices are marked up about 50% more than regular MSRP. As a small independent chain, they have to make a profit but you definitely see a higher price for the same items as compared to other stores or amazon, etc.
I'm surprised TRU is opening up in BB&B's space (K-Mart for those of us who have been going to TRU since the 80s). I thought them leaving Market Mall was the death of TRU in the NW! I've noticed a big shift at TRU to trying to sell more pop culture toys and replacing huge sections of toys with children's books. Its probably a good idea to offer books for kids but it's also a business decision by their new owner which is Sunrise Records to maybe stock something that is cheaper to get inventory for.
Decathlon is slated to open in the old MM TRU space by end of Sept!

Discovery huts cross iron location has closed sometime recently, unfortunately.
Chinook Centre updates over the last year with new retailers and relocations. No news on what is planned for the Sears/Nordstrom space so far.
I still feel like the Uniqlo store is undersized. Has anybody gone there recently? It was insane during the opening. Maybe some of these popular retailers should move into the Nordstrom space.

Most people don't give a ####.
Most of the people that show up at these things are amateur landlords that don't want more competition.
Nothing is stopping home prices rising. There's been too much QE and literal money printing. I will be dead before home prices drop materially.

TRU should never have left. BRU was big big business. Overleveraging killed them.
Decathlon is one of the greatest things ever. Sport Chek can go die.

What is the deal with the packaging language law that drives businesses away from offering prodcuts in Canada?
You go to Superstore and walk down the international food aisle. All their products are in their native language with a sticker in English and French. Can't this solve the problem?
I'm speculating, but it's probably because those products are being imported, so they're subject to different laws. If you're manufacturing or reselling (e.g. importing bulk and then repackaging) then it's a different set of laws.

Speaking of sporting goods stores, has anyone been into the new Team Town Sports at Heritage/Deerfoot meadows yet? I popped in to have a look a week ago and it looks like a really nice store but it was a ghost town in there. I havent heard any advertising for it at all. Wondering if they will be able to make a go of things or differentiate themselves in any way?

They are owned by Sporting Life who also owns Golf Town.
It's the kind of sports store that gives me bad vibes, like Sport Chek bland retail corporatism but with expensive name brands and catering to people who play team sports.
At least with Sporting Life, you get that aspen-bound rich kid shopping to look fashionable on the slopes feeling... and Decathlon, you feel like you are in IKEA and getting a bargain for whatever new sport you are going to try and give up on in 3 months.
Just like densifying is environmentally friendly, when many trees are removed, the green areas in the backyards disappear, and the air quality in the neighborhoods and the lower elevation area of the downtown area becomes worse.
What do you think takes more land, 12 single family houses, complete with concrete driveways, sidewalks and roads, or a 12 unit multi-family building?
Guess what, the land use of the denser development is WAY less. This means significantly more room for trees etc.
Also, a couple backyard trees don't make air quality better. Getting rid of all the cars commuting long distances to single family communities on the roads does.

It doesn't make significantly more room for trees as max lot coverage goes way up. Reduced front setbacks reduce the type of trees that large trees are replaced with (if they're even replaced). The remaining space is a small deck between the unit and the garage.
It's going from this:

From this angle I see a lot of room for garage-top trees.
You're joking but peaked roofs are a waste of space. Houses like that need flat roofs with usable space so that you can have a rooftop patio or garden or something.

Okay, now show us how much virgin land isn't plowed under for lots, utilities, and roads to/from/in suburban communities.
Yeah, losing that green space in the inner city is a bummer.
But people need to live somewhere, and putting more people on less land is a more efficient solution in the long run.

We can't have those because then you'd see into your neighbours yard. And they'd cost more.
