I did indeed get up to watch the match (I'll pay for it later today) and Felix played a great first set. Second set his level dropped (along with his first serve percentage) and Jaziri started making some shots. Felix saved three set points in set 2 before emerging victorious which is great to see. The maturing of his game continues including locking down a match in straight sets and avoiding having to play more tennis than necessary.

Yeah I don't like his chances to be honest. Unlike FAA, it feels like clay is going to pose a big problem for Shapo throughout his career.

So Lucas Pouille went to the semi-finals of the Aussie Open earlier this year winning five matches along the way including victories over Coric and Milos in the quarter-finals. Did you know those are the only five matches he has won this year? He lost again to Ferrer and it was a bad loss (6-3 6-1)

Felix into the top 30.
I can't tell from the rankings if Denis gets into the top 20 with a win, or if he needs another one after today.

Hes #20 now. A win today and he would jump botj Cecchinato and Monfils into 18th.

Shapovalov with the early break, now serving up 3-1 in the first set with Garin.

Aaaand he gives it right back. He was up 30-15 in that game, and then lost 4/5 points.
This kind of nonsense is why I am really concerned that Denis will never live up to his talent.

Denis in real trouble as Garin is serving at 4-1 in set 2.
Edit: Garin sends Denis packing 7-5 6-2

So either Denis just sucks at clay - in which case he shouldn't be playing in these tournaments - or he is mentally so fragile that he can't handle the slightest bit of adversity. It's at a point where you don't even want to be invested in him, because he's probably going to let you down.
... And then we take a step back and realize we're talking about a 20 year old with lots of raw natural talent, and he has time to figure the intangibles out. It is frustrating though. I want to watch him play well, because it's such a thing of beauty when he does. Just only seems to happen very intermittently.

I don't think he sucks at clay (he did make it to the semi-finals at Madrid last year) and played well at the Davis Cup tie against Slovakia on clay earlier this year. He recently parted ways with one of his coaches and is likely just going through some adjustments which will take some time. He just turned 20 as you mentioned CHL, so he certainly has time to figure things out. There will likely be more bumps in the road over the next 12-24 months for Shapo.

Bumps in the road would be fine, but he seems to have more bumps than road.
I was fine with this a year or so ago. But he's already had a lot of time to figure it out, and I'm starting to lose patience. Another year of this sort of inconsistency and I think we have to start wondering if he'll ever be more than a streaky top 20 guy who occasionally has a good tourney.

Nishikori up two breaks in set 1 serving at 4-1 - Not giving Felix any time to settle in as he's taking the ball so early on the rise and giving Felix all kinds of trouble.

Well, that was quick - Nishikori takes the opening set 6-1. I think the only hope for Felix is for Kei to drop his level of play, that was a sublime set of tennis.

Felix gets back on serve in set 2 - He stole a page out of Bianca's book and started junking it up to throw off Nishikori's rhythm and it paid off.

Darn it, Nishikori breaks and is serving for the match up 5-3 in set 2.
Edit: 6-1 6-3 was the final score. Felix didn't play badly at all, Nishikori was just on fire today.
