SimCity pedestrians 'teleport' to keep the game fun
By RUSS PITTS on Mar 29, 2013 at 8:00p @russpitts

"We just didn't realize the ridiculous scope of the game we were trying to make," said Dan Moskowitz, Senior Software Engineer at Maxis, creators of SimCity. "It became clear that our scope was so big we were standing on the edge of this giant chasm."

SimCity’s first free DLC is a logo-plastered Nissan Leaf charging station

Picked SimCity 4 Deluxe as my free game. Wish I went for something different instead. Oh well. It's not like I spend any time playing 4 or 5.

This sounds bad, and from what we were promised, it is bad, but it didn't need to be.

The key word here is "pedestrians", aka, only the people walking to commute.

This means, willfully ignoring the evidence to the contrary from other fan experiments, that, all the cars on the road are still the correct number of cars.

Prior to buying this game, if I was told that it is a glassbox engine that tracks every sim, but do to processing power and the sheer number of sims on the sidewalks they have decided to teleport a percentage of commuters who walk, I would of thought who cares. They just should have told us beforehand…..

I don’t want a game where I have to start managing sidewalk traffic when roads are bad enough as it is.

an ugly corporate sponsor building that provides tons of benefit with zero drawbacks, essentially meaning you cripple yourself if you don't use it in your city. god i'm so glad i uninstalled SC and never looked back

Through the mystical wizardry of Nissan corporate sponsorship.

Perhaps Nissan is going to copy Tesla. Under that model, you could effectively consider the power cost to be NIL, and assume that it is purchased from outside the region.

So instead of fixing problems they probably got a nice check from Nissan to design and build this addon.

What's next, build companies XYZ head offices in your city for a massive economic boom.

Build a McDonalds franchise and get increased pay?

Or how about build a Victoria Secrets sex shop and get a no crime boost?

Blatant commercialization of a broken game isn't really cool.

Well to be fair the people who would do this addon are probably not the people that would be fixing of stuff, for something like SimCity the people who do the buildings are probably script writers and artists that utilize functionality of the underlying game, not fix the functionality of the game.

Meh, I don't mind it in the way they've done it, as long as it isn't a game breaking thing or a cheating thing I'm ok with it. Though this does get close to the line (i.e. it's a clear upgrade, but it's not a pay to win upgrade).

I think what CC meant is that instead of fixing this mess of a game, Maxis has decided to release advertising into the game to squeeze a few more dollars out of it. And he is right.

Oh I bet stuff like that was planned looong before the release of the game.

Advertising in games has been around a long time, I can't remember what game it was but it was an older game, and I was playing it and the billboards in the game were for a current movie or something, I did a double take before I realized that they must be streaming the ads.

One of the Fear games I think.

It definitely was. This charging station was found in the art assets a while ago. It's probably been there since launch.

I wonder how many copies have sold to date, the only figure I can find is the 1.1 million from a few weeks ago.

Sounds like a lot of hardcore fans have moved on, but I'm curious to see if they're just a vocal minority and the game is doing well despite the fumbled launch and the flawed game play.

I haven't played in a week, and have no plans to play for a while. Had a couple of nice cities that couldn't get processed and got rolled back along with a few other issues. If they ever fixed their s--t I would give it another shot.

I always seem to get a city started, but seeing things like having a no industry or residential only city make it difficult to continue to the mid-game and end game. Especially considering how short it is overall.

One of these days, I'll be able to build my super tourist city which are connected via bridges.
