If someone's home has a value of $1 million, should they refer to themselves as a Millionaire?

Keep in mind this is someone in Toronto, where almost every detached house is >$1 million.

Depends on their debt. A millionaire is someone with a net worth of a million. Not just assets of a million.

The definition of millionaire seems to suggest that's incorrect.

Yeah, speaking as a millionaire myself, most millionaires and billionaires have incredible debt loads.

Cambridge's definition seems incomplete. Miriam Webster at least says wealth of a million which implies net worth. Millionaires usage is typically in reference to people who have amassed wealth and are considered rich. You aren't rich if your networth is poor.

Evolution and or misuse of words by some is why this is confusing.

Almost all other websites discussing the topic use net worth in a high value currency. Examples of people in million dollar houses with a negative net worth aren't considered truly what is referenced as a millionaires to the average person. The average person discussing millionaires are considering them to be wealthy and likely intergenerational wealthy. That's why net worth makes more sense. Someone with assets but is bankrupt is not what the average prison is thinking of when thinking of a millionaire.

So... I'm a Cambridge millionaire and a Miriam Webster working class?

That's fair.

Yeah, for me it would be more reasonable to ask if me and my wife would need $2M in net assets to consider ourselves millionaires, otherwise are we just a couple of five-hundred-thousandaires sharing a bank account?

Especially when she is surely thinking the same thing. You have to strike first.

Glad I didn't ask how much two be a millionaire when you have 2 kids at home too? I guess you just have to stay ahead of the spending, because that doesn't end.

Mexican multi-millionaire at your service

(Not racist, refers to equivalent pesos)
Per internet approx $77000cdn = $1 million pesos

Regarding “millionaire” definition I’d suggest that it should reference available monies such as cash and investments, excluding value of big ticket items like homes and vehicles. But generally it’s considered when net worth exceeds $1MM.

Yeah, regarding the new style of mullets with the shaved sides above the ears, moustaches, and pit vipers...are young guys doing this ironically, or is this an aesthetic that looks good for real (to them)?

Not ####ting on whatever style young people like. I know I looked ridiculous when I was young with the Kurt Cobain hair and baggy jeans, but this new style seems to go a step beyond. Maybe my hang up is I remember when mullets were kind of in for cheesy, Budweiser-kind-of guys in the 80s and then they sort of became the symbol for being a total out-of-touch behind-the-times loser with maybe a dash of white trash. So are guys chuckling to themselves when they dress up like this, or are they legit thinking, 'damn, I look good.'?

Oakley (funny considering the white Oakley reputation) makes some sunglasses that touch on the same vibe as Pit Vipers but look significantly better and less like a bad fashion gimmick.

Pit Vipers look horrendously trashy.
