I now have 123 Larvitar candy along with my near perfect hatch. Going to continue walking for the power up candy. Perhaps in another week I'll have a really nice Tyranitaur.
Where are you at malcolm?

Just caught Hitmontop, now 194.
Most other Pokemon just sway a bit when you open up their page. Hitmontop is full out dancing.

I saw both a Flaaffy and Magcargo on the map in the last couple of weeks but I couldn't find them before they despawned. Arg. Still haven't managed to see a hitmontops or tyrouge at all.
Yes it does seem like the evolve items are stupidly rare. Outside of the one dragon scale I got near the beginning there hasn't been another one.

Don't you hate it when you catch something you need and it's totally useless aside from a pokedex filler? I caught my first Chansey and it was CP 10 when I was at lvl 20. Same with my CP 58 Onix and CP 10 Mareep.

Is it just me or have egg drop rates gone down a lot? I haven't gotten an egg in at least 30 stop spins.
EDIT: 62 stops spun between eggs, then got 5 in a row. RNJesus was having a day off.

Anyone have any recommendations for a nice spot in Calgary where my brother and I can go sit, maybe have a couple drinks, and spin some stops for a while? Maybe even pick up a few rarer Pokemon in the area? We've been playing a lot again since Gen 2 while slumming around Copperfield, but it we're a bit tired of Sentrets, Spinaraks, and Ledybas, and we've never really gone to a spot where we can play the lazy game and make progress while not moving.

Usually downtown has a huge concentration of stops, if it's a good day you could sit near Prince's Island park and river cafe if you want a bite to eat. Lots of restaurants in the core have stops close by downtown.
Other places of interest
-University Research Park
-University of Calgary
-Shaw Millenium Park
Otherwise for specific ones, look on the SilphRoad

Productive weekend for me so far. After 108km walked I finally have my first Gyarados. Huzzah! Lots of chikoritas in my community as well so I managed to get a Meganium.

How difficult are the evolve items to get?
Gotten one so far, Sun Stone for the Gloom. Just grinding away for Oddish's to evolve one.
Hatched a Togepi and Togetic back-to-back though, so that was cool.

Any specific hangouts anyone can recommend? Maybe a nice pub with 2 or 3 stops in range?
I think we will head downtown when it gets just a little nicer. We'll probably want to pick up some battery packs before we do, too. My iPhone 5 battery is pretty much shot at this point. Lasts literally 20-30 minutes with the game open.

I suspect the rooftop patio at National on 8th since there's lots of stops and good GPS drift up there, but I haven't tried yet.

What I hate is getting same item over and over.
Have 2 each Bellossom, Sunflora, Steelix and Scizor.
I've read any stop that drops an evolution item will drop more from same stop at same time other days.
Maybe this is why I have more.
Maybe this is why they are all the same?
