Pardon me. Edited. I see him as a speedier Backstrom with more upside.

You got to be thinking of someone else. Lillegren maybe?

For Tanev, if it was Liljegren and a Minten level prospect I think I'd be okay with it. That's a serviceable RHD to replace Tanev. And helps T.O with some cap maneuverability.
I know the ask is a 1st. But it'd be hard to say no to a player prospect package that's valued at more than a 1st.

There's always a rental premium for a player with an expiring contract, particularly if the seller retains salary. Not having the guy count against your cap next year is attractive to contenders, who generally have enough problems re-signing their own players.
At the moment, Mangiapane is perilously close to being a cap dump. Next season, a lot more teams will be able to fit him in, and the Flames will have a new set of retention slots.
Maybe the best thing would be to move him at the draft.

Although if they have a spare slot this year, it's all the same as far as that goes.

True, but we don't know yet that they will. I certainly wouldn't move Mangiapane with retention until deadline day, in case that slot is needed for another deal.

Right. I just know that Conroy managed to avoid using them three times already. And he only has two pending UFAs left this year (not counting Kylington and guys like Rooney, Oesterle and Gilbert). He might need one for a goalie trade I guess.

Plus he can get in the middle of two teams and get say a 4th for a retention spot.
Add another couple of mid draft picks using two slots.

Speaking of Kakko, while I’m not huge on him, and given I believe he’s a fa after another year, would Tanev, third rounder for him work for everyone?

I'd be fine with that unless the Devil's would pay a 1st for some reason.

I think if a team is giving up a 1st for Tanev it'll be the Leafs.

Yeah by keeping those retention slots Conroy gives himself the highest flexibility possibible for the deadline. He can help broker some deals for teams that might otherwise be handcuffed.
If he doesn’t use them that’s ok too, but it’s great ammunition to head in to the deadline with

lol it honestly doesn’t make a ton of sense but Gio is Mr bean, if he is coming back has to be part of something bigger you’d think. Treliving has apparently been working away at something, come on Conman!!
