No idea how paying 6m+ for RFA years is using your leverage if your BT, especially when Johnny isn't even an RFA yet

Curious. Would you guys prefer 6 years at 6.7M or 8 years at 7.5M?

Why would an expert negotiator need to ask us?

I'm looking to get an idea of what people value more - term or cap hit - at 6+ years. Is there that not a valid item for discussion?

I would think you would have a focus group for that

To be honest I'd prefer the Flames keep this under seven per, even at 8 years.
55.2 million split over eight years.
Year One - 5.5
Y2 - 5.5
Y3 - 6.1
Y4 - 6.1
Y5 - 7.5
Y6 - 7.5
Y7 - 8.5
Y8 - 8.5
Plenty of money, very fair IMO.

I just don't see a scenario where Johnny would be willing to sign for 8 years at <7M. I would imagine we'd have to take the term down to get in the 6's.

The thing is you don't have any actual info on where either side is at, so just because you can't see a scenario where it's possible doesn't mean there isn't one.
In the scenario just listed Johnny gets paid quite well for his UFA years, and not as much in his RFA years which is pretty much how it has happened since the cap was put in place.

6.7 for just the six years, which only buys one year of UFA is just too much.
6.7/6 or 7.5/8 are me first contracts IMO

Of course not. I'm just posting my read of the situation. It seems to me that if Johnny was willing to sign for 6.9 on an 8 year deal it would be done already. Could be wrong.

More than likely it wasn't his first choice.
It's like negotiating to buy a house. The owner lists it at $x, but maybe they list it for higher than the market value and no one will pay them what they want so they end up having to drop the price to something more attainable.

Those people that are happy with or advocating a 6 year deal must think that Johnny will sign another long term contract in Calgary. I am very sceptical that he won't go east t that time. I also think he could be pushing north of $10M by then so I just don't get those that want to save 750k-1M per season to effectively close the window on this team 2 years sooner than it would if Johnny locked in for 8 years. Considering the window isn't even open I am only interested in a max term and could live with 7 years.
Someone explain to me why a 6 year deal benefits the team more than a 8 year contract

That's paying him less then 5.2 for 5 RFA years if you pay him 10 mil per UFA year.
He will be at least 7 if he goes 8 years.
