There is no compelling hockey argument for staying in school and I don't think anyone has been arguing otherwise. It's the safety and personal growth reasons that some fear may sway him.
If he stays, the only reasons could be:
-size gained to avoid injury, but that's pretty suspect
-wanting to play for another team. What team can offer the same chance of making the team??? Why go to a place where you have little chance to crack the roster
-personal growth, senior year, yada yada. I don't see Johnny carrying about that based on degree, etc
There simply isn't a compelling reason not to sign. I'm not worried at all

It is fun being on top of the mountain.
If he goes back, his line-mates will be nowhere near what he had this year - regardless of how good the team is.
He will be in a position where he is constantly compared to the season before. And it is simply not possible to do much better than this year was. You only get so much ice-time and the line is only going to be so good, regardless of how dominant JG is.
My point is this: there is no way that the situation can be better for him, hockey-wise, than it was this year. No way. And it would almost certainly be worse.
That is a situation ripe for regression, or at least no growth.
Sure there are other factors like finishing his degree and playing with his brother, but with respect to hockey, it would be a HUGE mistake to go back.
|
Maybe his offensive numbers do regress, but if the team is more solid defensively he may round out that portion of his game and become a more complete player too. It is not nearly as dire as you make it out to be if he returns.

They'll be different, but they will be good. No doubt they will be a top 5 team next year.

This year, BC has been the highest-scoring team in the NCAA. They have scored 160 goals. At least one of Arnold, Hayes, or Gaudreau has had a point on 108 of them (67.5%). There's a good chance BC's offence could decrease quite a bit next year.

Maximum bonus contracts are generally limited to the elite draft picks, so if he can get one, he's actually doing better than most.
Markus Granlund and Tyler Wotherspoon, who were both drafted two rounds before Gaudreau, don't have any bonuses on their contracts. Neither do Poirier, Klimchuk, or Sieloff. Kanzig doesn't even get the full ELC maximum base salary.
Looking at CapGeek, it appears that Corban Knight is the only player under contract to the Flames with a full maximum ELC contract with all available Schedule A and B bonuses. Monahan doesn't have any B bonuses, and Baertschi doesn't even have maximum Schedule A bonuses.

No. The maximums are set, but a player doesn't necessarily get the maximum. The Bonuses are also negotiable to maximum levels.
Look at the Flames salaries with bonuses included: http://capgeek.com/flames?exclude_bo...2F&team=flames
Monahan gets the maximum base salary and has maximum Schedule A bonus potential, but no Schedule B. Baertschi has the maximum base, but less than maximum bonus.
Poirier, Klimchuk, Wotherspoon, Sieloff, Billins, and Jooris all have the same NHL base salaries but were drafted everywhere from late in the first round, to not at all.

^Just to add performance bonuses for ELCs are difficult to achieve anyways, you have to be a pretty good prospect to achieve them while your ELC is active
For example:
as a forward to get all the Schedule A bonuses the cba allows (whose aggregate can be a maximum of $850k)
you would have to do at least 4 of the following (all compared to a min 42 games played):
1. be in the club's top 6 among forwards in ice time (aggregate or per game)
2. score 20 goals
3. put up 35 assists
4. put up 60 points
5. greater than 0.773 pts/game
6. get selected to play or play in the all star game
7. club's top 3 forward in +/-
schedule B bonuses can be up to $2 million dollars and are for finishing top 5 in voting for league awards like the hart, calder, norris, lady byng etc or being top 10 in the NHL with points, assists, goals, PPG, etc.
Cap geek has an excellent summary of how ELCS work if you want to read more

Dire? You got dire from my post?
Also, he is already dominant defensively in the NCAA - he really has nothing else to learn there

You can't. The bonuses go towards the next year's cap

Now it’s Johnny Gaudreau’s dad with words that must be unsettling to the Flames organization. Guy Gaudreau, whose son was chosen in the fourth round in the 2011 NHL Draft and has starred at Boston College, told the Camden Courier-Post: “If the management they had there before was there, like (former GM Jay) Feaster, the ones that drafted him, I’d be really comfortable letting him go. I know that (president of hockey operations) Brian Burke likes big boys, big hockey players. My son is not a big hockey player. He’s made it clear that he likes him or whatever, but I don’t think he’s sold on him. That’s been John all his life, wherever he tried out. It’s always been, ‘He’s got to prove himself, prove himself, prove himself.’ He’s done that over and over and over.”

The fact that the coach has to sit you near the end of games so that you're not completely blowing out other teams out of the water has to say something.

In this case, on HF someone speculated that Johnny was worth a 2nd at best and might be a career AHL'er and got jumped pretty quick.
I like how intelligent the Flames fanbase is, it means that bull#### posts like that gets called out often and quickly.

I love Gaudreau, but the guy may not he wrong. He still has a ton to overcome to become an NHL regular.
His trade value is more difficult to pin down so it would depend on the situation

Have you not realized that people really don't talk much about the articles that are optimistic and supportive of the Flames?
He's really just a salesman trying to get clicks and people to buy copies of the Sun. There's a reason he's not winning any journalism awards.
