That’s what the early draft previews have said. I don’t see the hype cycle changing that.

Thing is nobody knows yet and generally there are good players available in every draft.
I remember 2021 being a draft that wasn't that deep either but 2.5 years later it looks okay.
Benier, McTavish, Johnston, Sillinger, Johnson, Power, Eklund, Hughes, Guenther, Knies, Evans, Clarke, Coronato, Edvinsson, Svozil, Moser, Zellweger, Ufko, Morrow, Stankoven, etc
Maybe not the best draft ever but especially lately there seems to be talent in every draft, you just have to find it.
I'm sure Dallas has no regrets with getting Johnston and Stankoven out of that "weak" draft.

That Barn Burner podcast was an OG Conroy interview. He'd start answering a question and then halfway through the first sentence, seques off on a tangent. Doesn't complete that thought before he segues to another. Rinse and repeat. Gold.

If anyone remembers how bad and full of drama Canucks season was last year. Just miserable. The fans hated that they used a 1st to trade for Hronek. It ended up being a great move, they have a solid top pair now.

I hope the Flames go after some high potential RFAs for 2nd and 3rds using their cap space in trades as we have seen other teams do in the offseasons

Not all fans. Fans that who were desperate for a full rebuild. Like trade Pettersson and Hughes and start again style rebuild.
Some of us realized that Filip Hronek was the type of defenceman the Canucks desperately wanted and that paying a 1st round pick from the middle of the draft for him was a shrewd, smart move.
If one of these picks that the Flames acquire can land a Filip Hronek, the Flames are silly to not do it.

Your boy Donny Taylor hated it, I remember.
Heckuva a trade though, not sure what Yzerman was thinking.

Donny was in the "Trade everything and burn it to the ground" camp with Thomas Drance.
They have both since admitted "We were wrong."
Donny Taylor, not being an insufferable dweeb, admitted this much sooner than Thomas Drance, who is an insufferable dweeb.

You would probably put me in the doom and gloom camp. That's because I havnt liked the moves over the last couple years and wanted a change of direction from the current core.
I would certainly be open to moving draft picks for the right piece.
If a young center like Greg, Pinto or Norris became available I'd definitely be interested in moving a 1st for one of them.

Yes Taylor is fine, remember him on CKVU Sports page, Paul Carson too, rip.
They can fire Drance into the sun.

3. Trade Hanifin for 1st round pick + prospect + 2nd round pick + roster player
The Flames will then go into this 2024 draft with:
1st round picks (5)
2nd round picks (2)
3rd round pick (2) - if the Vancouver pick changes
With some of the trades above and these picks, they will restock their prospect cupboards significantly. If you can, package up some of those picks and end up with 2 Top 10 picks.
Next, suck again next year and get a Top 5 pick.
In 2025-26: You have a young and exciting team that is on the upswing (with still some veterans around in Kadri, Huberdeau, Weegar, Andersson)... and will be ready (if goes well) by the time the new arena opens.
All in all, if the Flames do this right, they can significantly jumpstart their re-tool/re-build.
|
Small problem with that plan - MTL will almost certainly be getting our 25 pick. So sucking to a top 5 is useless. And the uproar from fans, when the pick is top 10 but going to MTL will be both deafening and insufferable.

I actually like Drance. I don't know what's so bad about him and he's right more often than he's wrong, I'd say.

Well aside from my usual "overly negative Vancouver media" stance which is well documented.
He's just insufferable and will fight to not have to admit he's wrong, even when he's wrong. He'll start moving the goal posts and changing the question to keep his answer the same.

Don’t they get Florida’s pick in that situation? I thought the only way they get our pick in 2025 is if they are both outside the top ten picks. Then they get the higher of the two picks. Otherwise, they get Florida’s pick.

My understanding is if CGY have a top ten pick next year, MTL receives Florida's pick.
We need to tank next year
