A-10 being retired?
Quote:
Clarke, director of the Air National Guard, came at the question in roundabout fashion. He loved flying the A-10 Thunderbolt, better known as the “Warthog,” Clarke said. He noted that the plane was “near and dear to land warriors” for its GAU-8 Avenger, a 30mm rotary cannon that is the heaviest such weapon mounted on an aircraft.
But the Air Force was “looking at reducing single mission aircraft,” Clarke said, and under the sequestration process “we’re not getting any more money – that option is out.”
The Air Force “has to have a fifth generation force out there” of stealthy, fast and maneuverable aircraft, and the low and slow A-10 just didn’t fit in, Clarke said.

Might head out...
|
I would think not. No moon tonight. I plan to keep an eye out for a departure flight plan though and see if I can catch some better shots than the dull, overcast shots from the last one...if it goes out in daylight.
Also, it's coming in from the NW and might get vectored around for a landing on 34, if the winds cooperate. I look up any time I hear something going over, so I might be willing to make an extra effort to be outside if that bird is going over!

No flight plan filed for the departure yet, will post it up when I see it. With the forecast today if it departs it will probably be off runway 34 to the north.

She already departed, airborne at about 1431. Used runway 34 and was off to the north before turning east fairly quickly.

Loved those two liveries, especially the AC one. The maple leaf is actually made up of all of the AC employee names.

It is tough, simply a matter of being at the right place, at the right time. Winter months are best for sighting as the contrails are more prevalent. We are in a great geographic location for Elmendorf flights moving SE, Rocky Mountain House even better. The 477th FG at Elmendorf is now strictly F-22's as they wholly replaced the remaining F-15's a few years ago.

According to the Airport Authority today Nav Canada will have their RJ buzzing around doing its testing. Always fun to see.

Looking at its flight path on Flightradar24 it appears to be calibrating the ILS systems for the new parallel runway.
