For a Telus employee, I'm surprised you wouldn't be up to date on these matters.

Random question. I dropped my 3GS last night and it no longer vibrates at all. Before the little switch on the side was really loose and randomly switched from silent to loud which is a pain in the ass in class. Anyways I went into the apple store and basically told me that because I am out of warranty by a month my only option is to buy a new phone. When I bought it from the telus store the salesman didn't even mention an apple Care plan. So am I basically SOL?

Nobody said it will have a new form factor.
I believe it will be an incremental update, not a major revision.

For the same reason people spent $800 to get an iPhone 4. Because... I really have no idea. People are mesmerized by Apple products so common sense cannot be applied here.

People pay tons to get an unlocked smartphone with no contract because that's how much they cost. Doesn't matter if it's a iPhone, a Blackberry, an Android, or a Windows 7 phone they all cost $500+ new without a contract.

While this is mostly true (most non-iPhones are below the $800 price point), there seems to be an insane fervor over new Apple products. It is a product of the fact that Apple has built an amazing marketing system which is to the point now where it feeds off itself (see the speculation following the hint of an announcement leading to the Beatles release) to the fact that there is only 1 'new' iPhone, 1 'new' iPad, 1 'new' iPod Touch ... etc so anyone who is interested in that type of Apple Product will be focused on that one item.
With Android/BB phones, you have quite a few more manufacturers/models/price points that there really is no frenzy because of the lack of a focal point. ie Do I want Android Phone #3 or Android Phone #47, or any of the current range of BB devices that or any of the ones in between.

All non-iPhones and iPhones are below the $800 price point.
No doubt there's more buzz around the Apple products, and the nature of their product line is one good reason for it.
But that's not the reason I can still sell a 3G for $200, it's because the cost of the original product was very high. If I want to buy a Blackberry Bold I'm paying the same amount.

the only way another phone company will get my business now from apple is if they can make a great mp3 player product built into the phone. as it stands, in my opionion, the ipod is the best mp3 player. is the iphone the best phone ignoring the music options? from what ive seen yes. but i havent had a chance to play with some android phones like the droid x or droid 2.0 or w.e the heck it is. i also hear good things about the legacy. honestly tho having my music, mobile internet and phone in one package that is so functional and easily synced with my computer makes the ip4 so far ahead of anything ive ever used before i doubt anything comes close at the moment.

The hardware R&D, software, FCC certifications, and other costs around cell phones must be astronomical. An iPhone is about $187 in parts, according to analysts, and I bet other phones cost less (the BB's are plastic, with lower res screens, slower CPU's, less flash RAM, etc - they HAVE to be cheaper to make).
I can't see any other reason why the non-contractual costs are so high, except that phone development must be hellish expensive - there's enough manufacturers and competition that it can't be collusion alone.

Not really collusion, they just sell all they can make at that high a price so that's the markt price.
Developing the phone is probably very expensive tho.

I think it is a partially inflated price because the consumer does not always bear the direct cost of the phone due to subsidized phones on a contract.

Except for my Galaxy S and Desire, the former I paid $500 for and the latter around $400 with Telus team pricing. Only unlocked iPhones cost $800, thanks.

659 for a 16gb unit(Factory unlocked) compared to retail pricing of 549.99 for a Samsung Galaxy S (locked)
Contracted? 159 vs 99.

Galaxy S from Bell is $499. Rogers' is $549. Telus' Desire is $449... and $0 'contracted'.
Unlock code for my Galaxy S was stored in the device. You download an app and it gives you the code. Done in about 2 minutes.

The actual range of pricing doesn't matter, the point was that the high cost of used phones isn't because of Apple hype (which is what you said).
The used price is a factor of how much the phone originally cost and how much supply and demand there is. The iPhones are good phones so people want them. There's lots of demand for used Blackberries as well.
As I said if I want to buy a used Blackberry Bold, I'm paying the same range as a used iPhone 3G.

Yup
I bought the Blackberry Bold 9700 no contract last year for $650. My warrenty with Best Buy guarentees replacement phone if i have any issues. When my standby button broke (amongst other issues) I took it in and had the option to get the 16gb Iphone4 as it is also $650. I jumped on the opprutunity and am very happy I did as the Iphone blows the blackberry away.
So where the 32gb is a tad more pricey than most smart phones the 16gb is around the same price point as any blackberry or andriod.
