I'd take Drabek+Snider over Grienke anyday. DJF hit the nail on the head, people need to relax and realize Snider is only 22 years old!!! Most Major league prospects dont make an impact in the league until 24ish. He has excellent speed for his size and will easily be a 30+ homerun guy as early as next year. He hit 14 in under 300 AB's last year where he had an injured wrist. A full healthy season and playing everyday to get 500+ AB's IMO he hits 30 HR easy.
I would however wouldn't mind seeing a veteran arm added to the rotation and have Drabek and Stewart battle/share the number 5 slot.
As for Pena it would have to be a short term deal kind of a mentor to Lind to show him the ropes of first base. They could split time as the DH and first base together

I have to admit this, but I think that 1B defence is highly overrated. To me, at 1B, having a power bat is a huge must, but not at sub-200 batting average.

Batting average is a pretty over rated stat though. If the guy is posting a 850+ OPS and driving in 100+ runs, than who really cares what his batting average is.
1B defence can be important because it can allow the other infielders to look like gold glovers. The guys on the Yankees always rave about how Texiera saves them a lot of errors, and hence extra outs with his ability to scoop balls. But it definitely is a secondary factor, although in the AL East you can't afford to give the Red Sox and Yankees any extra outs.

No love for Rzerchynski? IMO If Zep can coax an extra inning of stamina out of his arm he's got the stuff to be an excellent rotation guy... He really does need that extra inning thou if he can't get it he's looking at a career as a lefty set-up man.
My own personal crystal ball says that the Jays ought to start the year with Drabek & Rzerchynski in the rotation and call up Stewart from AAA when rosters expand to help with the inning limits on the other young pitchers.

I never have been a big fan RyzHardtospell. He will have one great outing get my hopes up and they come out with 3 awful outings. If he could find some consistantcy he would be a good starter.

The Mariners are close to signing Olivo which would mean the Jays get a supplemental pick for about 500K

With the acquisitions of Crawford and Gonzalez, the feeling of beating the Red Sox this year is going to feel even sweeter

Brad Emaus was taken by the mets in the Rule 5 Draft. Had a pretty good year in Vegas.

The Jays also took a couple of middle infielders in the MiLB rule 5 draft, nothing special though. They`ll have to play in AA, and AAA next year.

We've given up quite a bit, but you've got to hand it to AA, the Farm system has come quite a ways since JP has left.

Another DJF made a great point how a lot of the times even though JP did surround this team with talent, it was based around the notion that almost everyone would have to be healthy for this team to be successful.
AA definitely seems to be building this team for the long term and with the chance of adding another playoff team by 2012 and Rogers willing to spend money on this team when the time is right, there is definite reason to be optimistic.

Jays rumoured to be in on Russell Martin. Declining stats (injuries)or not, he's still 27 years old and just approaching his prime. I think his ability behind the plate and leadership would go a long way with the young Jays pitching staff, and I am sure his stats would rebound hitting in the Rogers Centre.
The problem is that the Red Sox and Yankees are also in the mix, and particularly with the Sox needing a starting catcher, I think the Jays will have to overpay just to get him. Intriguing nonetheless.
It's a fun offseason to be a Jays fan with all of the youth and potential moving forward. A piece here or there and I think there is a real possibility of 88-90 wins next season.

LA was extremely concerned about his injuries playing a role in his decline, he is pretty risky.
I wouldn't mind slightly overpaying for Martin for 1 year, seeing what he has, and then go from there. Maybe he'll do it for the nationalism.
I don't see 90 wins at all from us, the pitching staff as it stands now is a year or 2 away.

With the Red Sox and Yanks throwing years around like crazy, I would be shocked to see him sign a 1 year deal.
You really don't see a potential 90 win team? 85 last year and that was with down years from Hill and Lind. Losing Marcum hurts, and you can't bank on 53 homeruns again from Bautista, but the starting pitching staff is pretty stable. One of Drabek or Stewart has the potential to come in and really surprise IMO, and I am really looking forward to watching Brandon Morrow pick up where he left off last August.
There are still a few questions to be answered (3rd base, relief pitching), but the offseason is still young and I fully expect a few more moves by AA. 2 years this team should be full on contending in the AL East, but I am intrigued by their potential as early as next season.

Good stuff. 5 mil per definitely hampers the value that it would cost to sign Crain/Jenks, so if we could get the pair for say 8 million or less then we'll have a very similar BP + 3 picks (Gregg + Downs)
Nice job AA.
