Wasn’t it reported at the time that Hanifin only wanted to sign with the Lightning? Vegas needed time to talk him into it.

The timing of when a potential trade will matter. I'm sure there is some variance in worth depending on how much term is on Whitecloud's deal should a trade occur. If they trade him earlier they likely garner an extra pick a bit higher. If they hold him for two years to the deadline maybe not.
Will need to see what the Flames ultimately do with Whitecloud. They might keep him and ultimately decide to move on from a guy like Weegar earlier type of thing as a longer term plan. I don't think Whitecloud gets traded this year, but I certainly don't know.

Kypreos and Bourne last week said that Whitecloud is worth at minimum a 1st. They said it could be a 1st +. They said he is exactly the type of Dmen teams are looking for for a play off run. Has size, can skate, is hard to play against and his cap hit is very manageable. So I don' think it is just a CP thing saying Whitecloud has value.

And if that's the case I think they move him.
Value to high to retain.
If they see a 2nd only they likely don't.
Imagine a Whitecloud for a first and Vegas winning the cup final tally?

I feel like it could end in a "2nd that could become a 1st" deal, or two 2nds type of territory.
I have no idea if they make that deal or not. I'd have a hard tie saying no.
So far conditions haven't gone their way though.

If you get a 1st or more for Whitecloud you HAVE to move him. Love his attitude, seems like a great dude and would have taken him any day of the week on the 2020 Flames. For the 2026 Flames, that future asset is more valuable.

regardless of when they are in the 1st round they are still first rounders. Potentially getting 3 first rounders + for Andersson is a win. Majority of the prospects people have been clamoring for, outside of Danielson, have been drafted in that 25-32 range.

Thats why its funny when people say "its only a late first". It becomes very hard to trade for guys once they're drafted it seems, and we value a player like Potter extremely high already

Which team would legitimately offer a 1st for Whitecloud?

The Pens are in the race and have 8 2nd round picks in the next 4 years. 2 2nds wouldn't be far off from a late first. The Andersson trade would then be a 1st and 3 2nds.
And if the wheels fall off the Penguins next year they could flip him for a comparable amount I'd wager.

Seider, Chiarot and Whitecloud? Looks alright to me.
I seriously dislike Hamonic though

Boston is probably jaded by the Andersson thing but I could see them offering one of their 4 firsts over the next two seasons for Whitecloud.
Dallas should too, but they are lacking 1sts.
If I'm San Jose I'm easily offering the Edmonton 1st for Whitecloud, trade for him and re-sign Ferraro and you actually have a decent defensive pair to throw out against other teams top lines.
He'd be more valuable for them based on team need and contract status than the questionable deal they made for Sherwood

Bruins, Sharks, Red Wings, Mammoth, Stars, perhaps even the Ducks.
I am a lot less confident in how Whitecloud stacks up against their depth charts but not all of those teams are looking for a top pair defender. Bruins, Red Wings, Stars could all argue that they have their top pair locked in and are primarily looking to upgrade their second pair.
What would be interesting is that Whitecloud's lack of trade protection would open the door for a trade with the Sabres. That was not possible with Andersson's NTC but if the Sabres view Whitecloud as an upgrade on their RD depth chart then perhaps they could enter the conversation.

Sabres have all their picks except for round 2 this year. This year's first likely looking mid first round as their playoff drought will surely end, could work well for both teams. Not that he has any say but Whitecould would probably rather play with a few stars than circling the drain in Calgary.

Who am I to disagree I guess, but I don't really buy it. I could see something like a 2nd and a B prospect. It's this kind of stuff that gets people's hopes up, then when he is dealt for less, they blame the GM for not getting it.
I personally hope we keep Whitecloud anyway unless it's a deal that knocks our socks off. He just feels like a Calgary Flame to me and the kind of personality you want around a rebuilding team with a lot of young guys. He seems legitimately happy to be part of the organization.

The guy is a professional and is doing the right thing in front of the camera but I have my doubts that he is "legitimately happy" about being traded from a playoff / cup contender to one of the basement dwellers of this season. The guy is most likely hoping that if he has a good attitude and plays well that he'll get traded back to a contender before the deadline.
This is good because one of the main drivers for trading Andersson instead of extending him was to make room for the young guys. Now the same logic applies to Whitecloud.
IMO, trading Whitecloud for another 1st would definitely help deal with some of the disappointment of the Andersson trade. Trading him for "more lesser parts" would compound the disappointment.
