That would be such a Hall/Oiler move hahahahaha. Honestly after this off-season and seeing him turn down a chance at a cup with Colorado for 1.5 mill more from... Buffalo??? I’m good.

I think this gives him a better chance at a cup. He’s got a NTC, so at the deadline he gets dealt to the team he wants.
I don’t get to hear very much, but a relative close to the team told me Hall wants to be an Oiler again. Lots can happen in a year but he thinks he’ll be back next year. What he said lined up with the media guys were saying.

I have no doubt that the Oiler brass believes that Hall wants to be an Oiler again.

I can see the Oiler brass believing this too. Better chance than what, exactly? Buffalo? Sure, maybe. Otherwise, it's just Oiler brass believing in their own awesomeness.
Not sure that I see Hall believing those things, however.

Yeah - if a relative close to Hall says this it’s one thing, this is different.

Hall's opinion about the Oilers notwithstanding I do believe that his reason for signing this contract was in large part for the opportunity to play with a contender of his choice in the playoffs. Of course, the only people who think that team might be the Oilers are the blathering Edmonton media.

The same person that was responsible for institution of all the reasons Hall had stunted development personally and no team success, and a generally frustrating time there the first time (bad coaching hires, the long history of creating a disorganized, toxic environment that no decent free agents choose to go there, misguided expectations for players etc etc) is still there and still doing the same things, overruling and meddling with hockey operations as he always has. (See Kassian's extension sandwiched between his Tkachuk encounters as this year's example).

At first, I was positive Hall went there to get the highest salary possible for the year and to increase his stats for the season, then pivoting and seeing what contenders there were out there that could trade for him at the deadline, so it gives him a trial-run on his new team to see how it goes before signing long-term. Makes sense to me.
However, maybe he just wants to really play with Eichel and thinks that their games might mesh well, and that Buffalo is a fairly young team but on the rise? Might have bought their pitch for the future. Having Eichel to play with for years might be very attractive for Hall. Iginla chose Pittsburgh not only because they were running hot and seen as contenders, but he specifically mentioned that having a chance to play alongside a centre like Crosby was very enticing to him, as was the possibility of playing alongside Malkin.
Hall played with McDavid already, right? Didn't they do poorly together, and Hall got moved to a different line with RNH? I kind of remember that, but it has been so long ago now with McDavid in Edmonton, and Edmonton always finishing terribly in the standings, that it all just seems like an indistinguishable blur to me now. Did Hall play with McDavid during watergate? Or was that still "Hall's team" then? Ah, forget it, nevermind... Oilers are worse than my memory or my level of care.
I just remember Hall + McDavid = no good, so I would be surprised he would welcome a return there.

Why would he go back if he now has the choice?
Stockholm syndrome ?

Interesting item from Burke on when he interviewed Yakupov for the draft.
Quote:
The worst prospect interview you ever conducted?
Nail Yakupov. Why did that one go sideways?
Because we (the Maple Leafs) were picking fifth in 2012, and he was outraged we would have the temerity to interview him. Because he was going to go first overall. And he was uncooperative and sulky. John Lilley, our chief amateur scout, I thought was gonna get in a fistfight with him. Wow. Did you call him out for being uncooperative?
That year in the OHL playoffs, his coach didn’t use him properly, and he quit trying. I said, “Do you think that was a good response?” And he said, “That’s not a question.” And John Lilley said, “Our GM just asked you a question. You answer it.” And he said, “It's not a question.” I said, “Well, it is a question. I want to know. Do you think that's a suitable way to act if we draft you?” And he wouldn't answer. So I was like, “Get him out of here, guys. Get him out of here.”

He just really didn’t want Toronto trading up to draft him because he wanted to go to Edmonton so he could play in a place that resembled desolate Russia.

Well, there IS a reason why the CCCP1 episode of SCTV worked out so well aesthetically-speaking...
Spoiler!
(They were filming in Edmonton during those years...)

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
