If Gimenez had hurt himself when he fouled that pitch off late in the game, the Jays would have needed to use either Little or Lauer in the field. Probably would have put them in a corner outfield position and moved IKF to SS, Clement to 2B, Guerrero to 3B, and Lukes/Straw to 1B. If they had no pitchers left to play the field, they’d forfeit the game.
They'd probably put Gausman in to hit and in the field since he wasn't going to pitch anyways. He was a national league pitcher recently.

I'm not saying it's easy to pitch to Ohtani, but our guys get breezed back a bunch, why not throw up inside at him to brush him off and keep him on his toes? All I see are guys throwing extreme to the outside where there's no chance of him swinging. Paint the outside corners and occasionally push him back. He's good but he's still a person who hits for average. I have high hopes for today as long as Bo and Kirk are back. Yesterday's sub for Barger was terrible but all can be erased today.

You're probably right. I do find a lot of the Jays pitchers are really throwing in the dirt or far outside to a lot of guys, this series and the previous ones. Not many are attacking the strike zone. Some of these guys can cost you, and it's worked to this point, however, the Dodgers have shown they won't swing at garbage. So you do have to Halladay and throw those pitches to get ground balls getting your defence to do their jobs. I really think they can do it, but they've been timid to do so.

Yeah, Roberts was playing mind games. Like saying he was going to use a position player earlier in extra innings. Even if you would prefer to save your bullpen risking throwing away a game to do it is just dumb.

I hadn’t considered the France angle, that makes it worse in hindsight. Though it would have forced Straw to stay as DH instead of fielding, but it’s not like he made a difference in the OF
The thing is that it was a tie game with none out when they made the switch here. So it was somewhat likely the Leadoff spot could come up later that inning and was certainly up one more time in the game.
If you're going to carry Straw than put him in the field when you have a lead, or as Jason14H said...to specifically go steal a base as a pinch runner or to be a massive speed upgrade. Even if you put him in for France, you still had Schneider on the bench who you could change him for afterwards to go bat.
