Yup and in fact everyone was petrified the Flames were going to take Schneider

Flames needed some top end, and we need it even more now. So assuming all players have the same chance of breaking out we'd probably feel the exact same now. But Schneider turned out pretty damn good.

The philosophy appears to be:

1.2 If player won't sign then trade the player
2. Get younger
3. Stay competitive
It seems that if Lindholm was willing to re-sign they would be interested in re-signing him. Alas, he is not.
I like most of the philosophy. I dont like 1.1.

That is fair, I would say 1.1 is even more nuanced than that. The Flames made almost no effort to sign Toffoli and Zadorov. It does not sound like major efforts have been made to sign Tanev. Efforts have certainly be made to sign Hanifin and it sounds like at the start of the year they had Lindholm pegged as a 70 point or so guy who would age well. The fact that those talks seem to have died off seems to indicate that this year has led to a re-evaluation of what Lindholm is.

Maybe we leave a guy or 2 there after the game

Boston has zero cap space.
Any trades with then will likely be nearer the trade deadline and will need to be essentially cap neutral.

Boston has no draft picks. I just don't see them as a fit imo.

I’d totally be fine with a 2025 1st which they do have.

Boston is always good, but they're also a team that can conceivably collapse at any time. I'd actually put more value on picks that are more distant in the future.

Paired with the fact that Bedards supposedly better cousin is up for draft in 2025, the more 1st that year the merrier. You’d probs be able to convince Boston to only top 5 protect it too.

just can't keep building around wingers. No thanks.
And IF a winger comes back from the Rangers, I'd want Othmann.

Who is building a team by trading rentals?
Don’t expect core pieces coming back.
That would be a decent return

Still though, that’s not the worst package for two players likely to be moving on. Kakko and Laff definitely have their warts but I’d be ok with that return so long as Conroy prioritized a young center return with Hanifin.
Edit: also, I think it’s a pipe dream to expect a return like that partly because I don’t want to get my hopes up. If a 30 yo UFA and a 34 yo UFA at 50 percent retention net you two under 25 yo wingers both of whom were drafted either 1OA or 2 OA in their respective draft years AND a 1st is included as well you start the car lol.

I could see Kakko and 1st coming back for that package. Laf is an overkill.

I got ragged a lot in the summer for harping on this, but it is painful that Maloney is still involved at the top. Should have been put out to pasture.

Rangers need centers so I do see a fit with Lindholm especially at 50% of his cap hit. Kakko would be a fine return with a 2nd or another prospect tossed in.
I would like the Flames to take a chance on a 22 year old former top pick that can impact the team instantly vs a very late 1st that is likely at least 3+ years away from making the team let alone making a large impact

Maloney hire always worried me, he didn't do much for Arizona's success and his relationship with Brad when they were both there didn't amount to much success.
His seemingly reluctance to commit to anything impactful continues to be haunt me in terms of which direction this team will go now that their backs are up against the wall with a plethora of high profile UFA's and trade targets.
I mean Calgary has 3 of the top 5 trade bait targets with Lindholm sitting at #1 and there's still chatter of the Flames "unsure" what they want to do. I pray its posturing to drive up the value, but Maloney meddling in decisions scares me too.
