Have the Flames ever retained on a player? I’m drawing a blank.

I suppose he was also technically a UFA, even though the Flames traded for his rights at the draft iirc.

Man, Bouwmeester kinda got a raw deal from some fans didn't he?

Bigger guys that don't play physical always draw the ire of this fanbase and really his offensive production was very dissapointing too as he never broke 30 points as a Flame.

This organization really needs to stop acquiring former Panthers stars.

The retained on Rittich when they traded him to Toronto. It ended up being around $100K.

I believe the Flames have used this tool far less than any other team in the league. Until I see the Flames use it to facilitate trades in the next few weeks, my belief is that it is dictated by ownership.

I thought the salary retained in that trade was by Carolina (for Eddie Lack). I think the Flames waived Murphy the next day.

It will be disappointing if the flames do not weaponize their cap space in these trades because that was the reason the flames took the package they did from Vancouver. It was rumoured that they were offered a second round pick for Zadorov from another team (I think it was Toronto) but it would have required the flames to retain salary.

The cap space can be used either by retaining salary or by taking back a bad contract. Either way, it should be used to maximize the return on these UFAs.

It was a case of many thinking he would be an elite number one who would dominate at both sides of the ice. But he really was not an assertive play driver. I don't think Brent Sutter's coaching helped him out. But the expectations were really high and he did not meet them. The fact that he took a substantial paycut to become a second pairing guy in St.Louis and went on to thrive there seems to show the Flames overpaid him quite a bit.

He is what I'd describe as paying a new BMW M3 and getting a Toyota Camry. You got a good reliable player, but that high end performance you wanted was not there. That said...you didn't get stuck with huge maintenance and repair costs and take a massive loss selling.

The Canes retained on Lack. The Flames bought Murphy out.

Yeah Harley and Johnson contributing already means the Stars may see an opportunity to really push with them on ELCs.

It's an interesting year because I think you could see some teams trying to go all in:

Central: Winnipeg, Dallas, Colorado
Pacific: Vancouver, Edmonton, Vegas
Metro: Rangers, Hurricanes (think they are a dark horse for Lindholm, Rob Brind'Amour loves him)
Atlantic: Boston, Florida, Leafs

I feel like all 11 of those teams feel like they have a real shot at the cup this year and could push chips in because they also have some high profile contract expiries in the next couple years or have aging cores.

Also I think you're going to have Tampa, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and New Jersey potentially looking to make moves to solidify their playoff positions.

Wonder when we start to see the arms race heat up

Avs fans really seem to love O’Connor. Those that I’ve spoken to say that’s the big hitch in that theoretical offer for Lindholm.

The flames have bought out many players which is essentially the same thing and is ultimately paying a player to not be on your team.

That's exactly it. These contending teams are not going to be offloading pieces like Frederic or LOC. They are largely important depth pieces at minimal caphits. They will absolutely not be available in a Lindholm trade. Their value to a cup contender far outweighs the value they would offer back to Calgary in such a deal.

Frederic has 16 points in his last 18 games playing in the Bruins top six.

And had they signed those two guys, the direction would have been firmly cemented as is. Even a few weeks ago there was the interview where Conroy said they realize they won't get truly elite draft picks because they don't want to bottom out.

There is still a lot to be skeptical about with this organization and how it does things. We'll have to wait and see what reality looks like after the deadline.
Signing or trying to sign Hanifin is not crazy. This team will be bad for a longtime if they go down to 2 proven NHL dmen (plus whatever Kylington proves to still be assuming they sign him). That is a big call, you trade Hanifin and you are really going all out on a 3-5 year rebuild because the backend takes the longest to mature and there are very few options on the UFA market usually for legitimate top 4 guys. If you need two of them even moreso. So I understand the hesitancy around trading a 27 year top 4 dman.

Lindholm on the other hand scared me but thankfully he priced himself way out of the market.

Perfect. Tell them they can choose between those guys or adding an additional second rounder to the deal

Yeah, never thought O’Connor was a guy on the trade board. It’s likely Johansen for Calgary since we need a center to fill Lindholm’s spot. And we should get more for taking on an extra year of 4m.

Useful, contributing players are almost never moved by buyers in deadline deals. The playoffs are a grind, and GMs of teams looking to make a run put tremendous importance on depth.

I mean, kind of. Buying out a player reduces the salary owned to that player as well. it saves the owner money.

But I agree, most teams would then go out and try to use the newly found cap space.

Either way, the fact I posted what I did means the Flames are now guaranteed to retain on their next few trades.

He was not a second paring guy for the Blues, he played with Pietrangelo, including playing on the Olympic team.
