Surfing in Tahiti is a cool concept as part of these games.

I actually like the Olympics. I know scores of people aren't interested for various reasons or are smug about it, but I love it all. Sport is the only battlefield humans should ever participate in, so I'm happy to support it. Plus I love seeing competition in sports I don't often get to watch. I love it!

I'm not sure I find the IOC any more disgusting than pro sports in general.

I'm also not a big fan of unabashed patriotism, but I like the vibes from the Olympics and how they serve as a cultural touchstone for a few weeks every few years.

Huge missed opportunity for Calgary, Alberta, and Canada. Could have been a rallying event for a generation.

Here's where the next scheduled games are:

2026 - Northern Italy

2030 - French Alps

2034 - Salt Lake

And for summer:
2028 = LA; 2032 = Brisbane

The wave in Tahiti is called Teahupoo (pronounced Cho-pu) and it can be big and awe inspiring.

I hope it turns on for the games and they get a legendary swell. It’ll open some eyes.

I agree that it's difficult to fully care about the Olympics these days. It's still enjoyable, and some of the events are worth tuning in, yet it's mostly background noise during the dog days of Summer.

Personally the NHL, NFL, and recently Euro catch more of my attention.
Your first paragraph is kind of the point of the Olympics. It’s the reminder of the greatness humans can achieve when they come together. It’s more important in a world with simmering wars than one without.

It's a shame that Ross Rebagliati happened in 1998 instead of 2002. We could have really used that so soon after 9/11.

Me either, especially when it comes to individual sports. I'm supposed to go bananas for someone because we have the same passport and they won an individual sport I don't care about? I'll be watching MLB as usual.

I enjoy the short track running for the pure spectacle of how much better people do each time.

Just curious, would you watch the Olympics if there was a ball scratching / spitting biathlon?

I appreciate the Jays in 30. You get the gist of the game but it cuts out a fair amount of that

All sports are about laundry as much as the Olympics are about passports

I love the Jays in 30. I really wish they'd put it up sooner though. It's done after thr game because the play it on TV sometimes, but even when that happens it isn't in the sportsnet app until the next day.

Sure, but I get to pick my favorite team and not have this uncomfortable nationalism about where the players are from. I suppose I understand it for countries with near zero immigration, though at it's root, I still find it almost tribalism. Country A got fewer medals than Country B! So...what, exactly?

Also a problem I have with cricket, though I find the actual game quite enjoyable. I can't just look around the league and pick a team to follow. The top level of competition is national teams playing against each other.

I get that not everyone likes baseball, and not everyone likes hockey. I'm fine liking the 3rd and 4th most popular sports and not the 1st and 2nd; find them both more interesting than football and basketball and one of them is always in season.

You don’t really pick your favourite team. In general it’s inherited or based on where you live.

If you want non-nationalist cricket you should follow the IPL.

In my case my dad is a Flames fan so that's why I am too, but for other sports I just picked a team. And I don't change who my favorite teams are when I move which seems rather silly.

I actually wish they would spread more events across the globe for the Olympics. Make it a truly global event.

That would just be like their normal competition schedule. The thing that makes the Olympics unique is having all the best athletes from the various sports competing in the same location at the same time.

Yeah, there's events of the highest caliber in all these sports all the time all over the world, without fanfare. It's the centralized fans and media that make it what it is.

You're not going to have tens of thousands of fans from all sorts of countries in a 20k stadium watching the majority of these events if you just had them spread in random countries. You'd just have a few hundred or couple thousand fans of the country any given event is in.

They literally do that every year for all these events. No one cares without the Olympic tag tho

And the critical mass nature of the Olympics helps a lot of the lesser known sports get attention and viewership, such as Americans watching curling.
