Wait, does that mean sportsnet isn't even adding in ABC watchers in Canada? I'm sure there's a lot, I wonder if the viewership is even a couple million higher?
Wasn't there some website from the Bluejays runs that was bang on with Canadian ratings?

Thoe would include all viewers i believe. Otherwise you are suggesting that 1 out of every 3.5 people approximately in the country was tuned in...which doesn't seem plausible at all.
Even as is...those are astronomical numbers for a Wednesday night.

Well the Blue Jays hit 11mil peak viewers a couple times. Just the wording threw me a bit, as they seem to imply they were announcing their own network (plus citytv) had those ratings, where as myself and it sounds like many others watching on ABC.

Although, thinking about it now, American networks claim they don't get to count Canadian viewers on Canadian cable packages, so it would make sense that Sportsnet probably gets ABC's viewers since sportsnet owns the Canadian rights.

A couple interesting Raps business of sports items I came across today:
1) Taxes for the Raps players to give you an idea of how much these guys take home after taxes.
Quote:
For some, the differences are exacerbated. Raptors star Kawhi Leonard was born in the U.S., and was traded from the San Antonio Spurs to the Toronto Raptors in 2018. From Texas – a state that charges no income tax – to Toronto, Leonard’s tax liabilities on his $20,099,188 salary increased by about $2.07 million, according to Forbes. He did, however, receive a multi-million dollar trade kicker.
|
Quote:
California’s Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, for example, takes home about $17,751,150 of his $37.5 million gross wages, according to Raiola’s calculations. Curry pays around $14.7 million in federal taxes, and just shy for $5 million in state, local and jock taxes. Curry is currently the league's highest-paid player.
|
2) A podcast recently aired called "Unhatched: The Birth of the Toronto Raptors Franchise" with interviews from a few players, coaches, and mostly from John Bitove about how he came up with the idea and followed through. Some interesting tidbits in there. Found it on the Podcast app on the iPhone.

Baseball is far more established and has had a way longer presence in this country though, so higher numbers would expected in big games I would guess.
I have no idea for sure, but i suspect regular season numbers when both teams are at an equal level, wuld see the Jays markedly higher.

Not that surprising though.
With what they forced that moron from the Clippers to do, this was almost expected.

Mark Stevens (guy who shoved and yelled at Lowry) has been banned for 1 year and fined $500,000.
I think that's enough, personally. I would like to see the fine donated to Lowry's charity. Based on Lowry's media availability today though, he isn't going to think it's enough. He wants the guy's ownership stake gone and banned from all games permanently. For me that's a bit much but apparently others feel differently.

I understand it was a stupid rash act and bad PR for the league and team, but this seems pretty harsh.

Was it five years ago, or six? Raptors announcer Matt Devlin doesn’t remember—that’s how naturally his signature three-point call developed. It started with a Kyle Lowry three, he thinks, from Mississauga!, or something like that. “It’s nothing that original,” Devlin says. Broadcasters have been yelling from downtown since the 1960s, at least, adding local markers for effect.
The Raptors, though, are different, positioned as a country’s team rather than a city’s, and so the call became its own thing too. Suddenly Devlin was shouting out Yellowknife, 5,000 kilometers away in Canada’s Northwest Territories, and Edmonton, and Halifax.
And yet, the Raptors’ run isn’t all Devlin will cherish from this spring. Because while the city’s basketball culture has been properly introduced to the states, its voice has become properly Canadian.
Last year, the Devlins began applying for Canadian citizenship. They already felt at home in the country, staying during the offseason. During his first year on the job, Devlin would spend flights to and from games quizzing then-producer Paul Graham about his new audience and his new home. A decade on, Devlin’s son Ian was drafted into the Ontario Hockey League (how about a shoutout for Barrie then, eh). What’s more Canadian than that?

The banning is fair, but a half million fine? That’s insane
Lowry was one arm pushed. Not like he was knocked out

Have to wonder if maybe there was some more to the comments Stevens made to Lowry. Maybe the NBA wants to sweep this away as fast as possible.
