Sliver's earlier dilemma reminded me of a guy I used to work with. He was a single guy in his 40s getting back into the dating scene and I wanted to tell him gently that he should change his cologne because it was some musty outdated smell. I debated over it in my mind, wanting to help the guy out but didn't in the end. Anyway, he's been on my mind this week and I just googled him to see what he's up to only to learn that he died suddenly aged 59 a few months ago. I'm a bit stunned right now. We only worked together for a year, but it was just the two of us for the last couple quiet hours of a night shift so we had some good times just talking about music and shooting the ####. Damn. RIP Derek, he was a good guy.
It's not even the first time this kind of thing has occurred for me. Twice I've learned years after the fact that people I knew (another guy I worked with and a girl from university) died in their early thirties. It's a really odd feeling learning that people who pop into your head now and then (so acquaintances, not family/friends whose deaths you would know about in real time) actually stopped living months or years ago.

Yah I hear ya. Happened to me a couple times too. Most recently early this year... a fella I worked with last year who I enjoyed his take on things, was technically fantastic, then suddenly I couldn't get hold of him so contacted someone else who said he'd suddenly passed. Didn't know him well enough to be considered a friend, but it hit me harder than I expected. This stuff logically happens... the longer you're around the more people you know that have passed.

I was driving with my kid in the car and she saw sign for the Teddy Bear Picnic and Parade next weekend. She asked if we could go again, because we have gone in the past, and I said of course. I was really happy that she has grown to the point that she can read signs without help and it was kind of a milestone moment. But then I realized that this is also probably the last time that she is going to want to do something like this, and I felt really emotional about it.
Being a parent is weird sometimes because you want your kids to grow up, but you also mourn the loss of the previous editions. I am not sure if I am wording that correctly, but you miss that baby that you will never see again, then you miss that toddler that you will never see again, then the kindergarnter, and so on. I guess you kind of do that with adults when they age, but it isn't so fast and often because kids change so much all the time.

I sometimes Google old co-workers at times to see if anything has happened to them. Most interesting was a real jerk who got fired, found out like two years later he tried robbing a bank and got arrested. I imagine he went to jail.

Teddy Bear Picnics turn into other activities.
My girl and I play hockey together now instead of going to Teddy Bear picnics.
It isn't the activity per se it is the time together and the relationship built through those activities.

This, for sure...
My son is 13 now, and there have definitely been times in the past I'd just stop and catch myself thinking things like "When's the last time I picked him up and carried him?" or "When's the last time I kissed him goodnight", "When's the last time he reached out to hold my hand while we walked?". Seeing family photos from vacations not even 2 years ago where he still looks like a little boy, now he's 5 inches taller than me, and has a moustache coming in!
Definitely cherish the moments you have with them at every stage, though more often then not it's so much fun adapting with them as they grow, you don't realize what you're outgrowing until it's long gone.

Man, I enjoy older kids so much more than babies/toddlers.
My son is 15 (16 in three months) and my daughter is 17. Last week I was walking somewhere with my boy and he grabbed my hand and held it just like when he was younger. Left it for maybe a minute and then ripped it away haha. He was totally embarrassed...I think he just kind of went into comfortable little-kid mode for a second and I really enjoyed it. That was kind of neat.
Yesterday he called me by my first name by accident. Sometimes we hang out like we're friends and I think he got caught up in the moment - that was awesome, too.
Daughter has been a little unsettled since she lost her grandma last month. Every few nights she'll crawl into bed with me and my wife. Sometimes she'll stay all night and sometimes just for an hour or so. We don't mind since we know that won't happen much longer.
I like that our kids can still just be kids around us. Everyone's wired different, of course, but these little rascals of mine are really loving and even though they look old they're still basically nine-year-olds in a lot of ways depending on what's going on around them and how they're feeling.
Anyway, the point is don't worry to much about stages flying by. Hopefully you're lucky and the stages just keep getting more awesome and you keep building more memories and stronger bonds.

So do it.
My girl is 19 and I still kiss her (on the cheek or forehead) good night every night unless she is out, then we always text.
My boy is 17 and I give him kiss before bed every night (on the cheek or forehead), if he is out I text him.
We commonly say I love you around the house, and both will say it to my wife and I in front of their friends.
Watching movies is standard, girl snuggles with me, boy with his mom.

A huge police escort just went down 5th St SW with like a couple dozed cops (in SUVs and on bikes), and about another dozen official looking SUVs. Anyone know what that's about?

I'm mostly concerned about the sleeping cops on bikes. Seems hazardous.

CPS is doing their motorcycle/escort training from today until the 9th. Expect to see a bunch of 'escorts'.

They could be asleep and still not be the most clueless person on a bike I've encountered this week.

My biggest fear is robots with guns. The idea that someone can mass produce an army of dispassionate killers is terrifying.
